Job Description

Main purpose of the job:

• To analyze, interpret and produce patient results on blood, body fluids (i.e. Urine, CSF, and other fluids), and specimens and to implement and maintain the quality management system for the laboratory
• Carry out research as per grant-funded objectives in accordance with GCLP

Location:

• VIDA - Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital xe2x80x93 Soweto, Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

Analyse, interpret, and produce patient results

• Receive labeled and captured samples as defined in protocol/SOP
• Check and verify that details on tubes and labels correspond
• Check the suitability of samples to be analyzed xe2x80x93 as defined per protocol/SOP
• Check the tests required and log them on the worksheet
• Perform instrument and manual tests
• Prepare reports as and when required by relevant protocol/SOP
• Analyse and interpret the results
• Re-run tests as and when required
• Follow up on incomplete tests and ensure completion thereof
• Initial print out and file it according to SOP

Quality assurance and control

• Provide training to staff on documented SOPs, policies, and procedures
• Devise and maintain documentation of the QMS
• Perform internal quality control in conjunction with relevant staff and assess their accuracy and conformance
• Report all non-conformances within the QMS to management
• Oversee the maintenance and calibration of equipment
• Prepare and attend to audits

Laboratory administration

• Monitor and control stock levels and advise if goods have to be ordered
• Monitor and control workflows and turnaround times
• Perform relevant administration i.e., filing, copying, faxing, etc.
• Report any quality control issues to laboratory management
• Print outstanding lists at the end of the shift to ensure that all tests have been performed and resulted xe2x80x93 hand over
• Demonstrate cost consciousness and assists in meeting budgetary targets

Customer Service

• Act in a professional and friendly manner in all dealings with internal stakeholders
• Show a high level of customer centricity at all times

Effective self-management and performance ownership

• Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management.
• Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained

Required minimum education and training:

• National Diploma in Medical Technology or Biomedical (3 years)
• Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) essential

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum 3 years experience in a clinical pathology laboratory
• Serology and microbiology skills will be beneficial

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Shift work due to project requirements
• Certification in good clinical laboratory practice (GCLP) and basic health and safety
• Ordered, systematic, and analytical
• Exceptional organizational and administration skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and laboratory systems (DISA, Meditech)
• Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
• Assertive and confident
• Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
