To effectively support medical and laboratory management through technical and administrative functions

Key performance areas:
Receive research samples and evaluate for quality as defined in the study protocol
Support surveillance, referral, and project activities by processing samples received according to various SOPs/protocols. Result entry and result analysis as required
Store samples as per the SOP/protocol and enter samples information on the freezer database system
Periodic checks of freezers to ensure that database is current and accurate
Complete and check file sample requisition forms as per study-specific protocol
Monitor equipment and create temperature charts daily as required
Routine maintenance of equipment used as defined by the specific equipmentxe2x80x99s SOP
Conduct stocktake and order consumables and reagents
Storage and management of biohazardous waste and toxic materials as and when required
Prepare and sort sample aliquots for shipment according to IATA guidelines and defined by the study-specific protocol
Prepare shipping lists and documents for sample shipment when required
Analysis of data
Put into place and maintain procedures for accreditation of the laboratory and good laboratory practice
To apply new trends in diagnostics and to respond to the quality system of AMRL-CC overall
Designing, developing, and managing the Molecular Biology Laboratory and staff
Designing and performing and troubleshooting of laboratory experiments
To perform phenotypic and molecular diagnosis for isolates for Proficiency Testing Schemes
Required minimum education and training:
Master of Science qualification
Required minimum work experience:
One (1) year working experience working as a Medical Scientist in a Microbiology Laboratory
Professional body registration:
HPCSA Registration as a Medical Scientist is preferable
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:
Must be well-organized, systematic, and analytical
Exceptional organizational and administration skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and laboratory systems required
Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
Self-motivated and able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
The successful incumbent will operate in a microbiology laboratory where health and safety must be applied at all times as there will be exposure to hazardous and infectious samples
Work in a pressurized environment in meeting turnaround times in high volumes
Communicate effectively with all laboratory staff
Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with external laboratories, nurses, clinicians, couriers, medical representatives, equipment suppliers, and technicians
