Mechanical Superintendent (Mining)



Our client, a leader in the mining industry, is seeking a highly skilled

Mechanical Superintendent

to oversee the daily operations and mechanical maintenance of a ship-based processing plant. The successful candidate will manage teams, ensure compliance with mine health and safety regulations, and coordinate mechanical systems and piping projects to achieve operational excellence. This is an on-site contract role based in

Cape Town

, with the processing plant located onboard a vessel.

Minimum Requirements:



National Diploma or Degree in

Mechanical Engineering

or a related field. 5-10 years' experience in mining maintenance, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.

GCC (Government Certificate of Competency)

preferred. Strong leadership, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of SAP or CMMS systems. Proven experience in construction safety practices, project management, piping systems, and mechanical inspections.

Roles and Responsibilities:



Maintenance Management



Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance programs. Oversee daily maintenance of fixed and mobile plant equipment such as crushers, conveyors, pumps, loaders, and haul trucks. Minimise equipment downtime and ensure quick turnaround on breakdowns.

Team Leadership



Supervise and mentor mechanical foremen, artisans, and technicians. Conduct performance reviews, identify training needs, and foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Planning & Scheduling



Collaborate with planners to schedule maintenance shutdowns and repairs. Ensure the availability of spare parts and tools. Coordinate with production teams to reduce operational disruptions.

Compliance & Safety



Ensure all mechanical work complies with mine health and safety regulations. Conduct risk assessments, enforce safe work procedures, and lead incident investigations with corrective actions.

Budgeting & Cost Control



Manage maintenance budgets and control costs effectively. Monitor equipment lifecycle costs and recommend replacements or upgrades. Source and evaluate suppliers and contractors.

Reporting & Documentation



Maintain accurate maintenance records and reports. Analyse equipment performance data to generate KPIs. Report on equipment availability, reliability, and maintenance efficiency.
