Description

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) in South Africa has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Literacy Teacher Training Specialist. DBE has identified a need for additional support to meet its mandate of ensuring literacy, numeracy, and open-minded, problem-solving skills to tackle the challenging issues of the day. Specifically, there is a need for additional training and capacity strengthening for a number of small farm schools in Mantsopa District in the Eastern Free State.

The PCRV will collaboratively develop an effective training program to assist teachers and their aides to identify and develop tools, skills, and abilities to enhance in-classroom education across all subject matter. The PCRV will also demonstrate training first-hand by conducting literacy, enhanced classroom techniques, and improved technical teaching methodologies. The goal of the assignment will be to collaborate with school teams to enhance literacy, pedagogy, and classroom techniques and instructional methods.

Please note that departure dates and other details of this project could change because of the uncertainties as Peace Corps and local partners resume volunteer operations. Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in South Africa together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.

Required Skills

• Bachelor's degree in education or other relevant field
• Experience providing professional development training to teachers or other relevant training of trainers experience
