LEGAL ADVISOR

Duration: Permanent

The South African Medical Research Council is looking for an individual to render professional functions and duties in a vibrant environment. The successful candidate must be willing to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines and must be customer and service delivery orientated. The Legal Advisor will report to the General Counsel: Legal, Compliance, Public Policy and Governance and will be permanently based at the SAMRC Cape Town offices. The successful candidate should be willing to travel if required to do so.

Responsibilities:

• Attending consultations with SAMRC officials and providing advice and guidance on both procedural and substantive legal issues

• Negotiating, Drafting and Vetting written legal contracts in a manner that complies with the SAMRC compliance environment. Excellent contract drafting skills and the ability to work independently to meet specific deadlines are required.

• Research for the purposes of preparing opinions. Independent evaluation skills and knowledge of legal resources and databases and computer literacy are required.

• Litigation management. A thorough understanding of civil litigation processes and the applicable court rules is required.

• Good working knowledge of legislation and case law relating to administrative law, procurement law, the law of contract and delict, labour law, interpretation of statutes and other areas of the law applicable to the public sector; Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English

• Innovative problem-solving, analytic thinking and presentation skills is required.

Core Requirements:

• LLB-Degree or similar relevant qualification or higher

• Admission as an Advocate or Attorney

• A minimum of 5 years' appropriate practical post qualification experience is required. (post obtaining the LLB)

• Note: Proof of your admittance certificate as an Advocate or Attorney must be attached with your application.

• A certificate of Good Standing will be required.

• Willingness to relocate and be based permanently in Cape Town.

Advantageous:

• Proven experience of a role in a legal advisory capacity

• An interest in public law and the application of Public Finance Management Act.

A salary in the region of R558 143 per annum, cost-to-company.
