LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER (TWO POSTS)

The incumbent will be responsible for:

Teaching in two of the following modules offered by the Department of Public Law at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, which involve taking a contextual and transformative approach: + Administrative law
+ Legal interpretation
+ International air (aviation) law
+ Public international law including international humanitarian law and international criminal law;
Conducting academic scholarly research; Engaging with the community through teaching, supervision and research that is embedded in and responsive to the African and South African social context; Having an in-depth understanding of own area of specialisation to enable development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field; Supervising research students; Mentoring students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; Academic administration and management; Performing other duties as delegated by Head of the Department


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer:



LLM (preferably by full dissertation) in one of the abovementioned fields; Relevant tertiary teaching experience will be a strong recommendation; Accredited quality publication/s will be a strong recommendation; Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching will be a strong recommendation; Relevant academic administration experience will be a strong recommendation.

Senior Lecturer:



LLD / PhD degree in one of the abovementioned fields; At least five years' tertiary teaching experience; 8 accredited publications in peer-reviewed journals of which three should have been published in the three years preceding the year of application; Conference papers delivered; Evidence of successful supervision of at least research master's degrees or coursework master's mini-dissertations will be a strong recommendation; Evidence of community engagement; Proven record of academic administration and academic citizenship.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

Lecturer:



Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team; Appropriate communication skills; Willingness to learn (i.e., Learning Management System and the use of technology enhancing learning); Leadership Skills; Computer literacy.

Senior Lecturer (same as lecturer plus)



Participation in academic conferences, seminars, and workshops. Ability to plan and initiate discipline-related research.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

Demonstrable subject expertise and interest in the following area related to public law: + Constitutional Law.



The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
