The Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology is an interdisciplinary department with a rich scholarly programme at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is a collegial, collaborative space that values collective intellectual work. It hosts a SARCHI in Land, Environment and Sustainable Development and a Mellon funded scholarship and seminar programme. Our teaching load is three term-length courses per year for all staff members.
Duties:
n Lecturing three term-length courses per year (generally two undergraduate and one postgraduate);
n Research and publication;
n Supervision of postgraduate students;
n Administration, including management of courses taught;
n Department citizenship, including in a range of departmental activities, including meetings, seminars and workshops;
n Working collegially and collectively in an interdisciplinary environment.
Job Requirements:
n PhD in Sociology (allied disciplines will be considered if sociologically relevant);
n An emerging research profile: at least two peer-reviewed journal articles (one in an international journal);
n One year of undergraduate teaching experience in large classes (with more than 150 enrolled students);
n Experience with supervision at Honours level;
n Expertise in two of the following five fields: Sociology of Race and Inequality, Public Sociology, Sociology of Education, Historical Sociology, and / or Sociology of Development;
n Excellent communication skills;
n A cover letter situating your research in relation to the Departments expertise and vision.
Recommendations:
n Experience with curriculum design;
n Experience with supervision at Masters level.
