Responsible for delivering senior-level driving expertise while providing support to the controllers in managing and coordinating recycling and waste collection and disposal operations. Act as a senior driver, ensuring safe and efficient driving practices, helping during emergencies, and serving as a standby Driver when required. Assist the Transport controllers with daily planning, managing Drivers, and handling various administrative and operational tasks with the Transport Department.

Responsibilities

SHEQ

• Ensure all staff are informed about legislation, rules, and responsibilities outlined in the company's Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Handle on-duty injuries and report them according to the prescribed Injuries on Duty (IOD) policy
• Implement corrective and preventive procedures as required
• Investigate and report all incidents and accidents, taking preventive actions to avoid future occurrences
• Conduct weekly toolbox talks with Transport staff, Drivers, and Assistants
• Ensure adherence to safe working practices and provide proper induction for each vehicle type.
• Maintain proper housekeeping standards
• Ensure compliance with AARTO (Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offenses) regulations

Senior Driver

• Safely operate trucks, following traffic and safety regulations, while efficiently transporting materials to designated locations
• Serve as a role model for other Drivers, demonstrating exceptional driving skills, professionalism, and adherence to safety protocols
• Provide relief support for Drivers when needed, ensuring operational continuity and efficient workflow

Planning and route management

• Collaborate with the Transport controller to plan and schedule waste collection and disposal activities, optimizing routes and load capacities using our vehicle management system
• Assist in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and guidelines throughout waste management operations
• Contribute to the development of strategies to enhance operational efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and customer satisfaction

Driver management

• Oversee and manage Drivers during shifts, providing guidance, support, and performance feedback
• Monitor Driver activities to ensure targets are met, loads are completed, and safety and operational procedures are followed
• Foster a positive work environment, promoting teamwork, professionalism, and open communication among Drivers
• Ensure company vehicles are clean, well-maintained, fuelled, and operationally ready.
• Maintain a safe off-loading environment, ensuring complete emptying of the vehicle at the end of each shift and readiness for the next shift
• Ensure the return of tablets and vehicle keys to the control room in the designated space.
• Ensure Drivers utilize vehicle management system and local knowledge for collecting recycling and waste within specified timeframes
• Ensure Drivers accurately follow the pre-planned route, minimizing deviations
• Record the departure times for all vehicles and provide the document to the Transport Administrator

New Driver/Runner training

• Document and report the progress of Drivers undergoing training
• Train new Drivers on correctly completing electronic vehicle and trailer inspection sheets
• Train new Drivers on the proper use of the vehicle tracking system
• Train Drivers on accident and damage procedures
• Train Drivers on operating specialized vehicles
• Train Drivers on manifest and weighbridge procedures
• Train Runners on loading and offloading procedures
• Train Runners on safely securing nets over cages

Planned job observations

• Provide daily supervision of assigned Drivers, ensuring proper and consistent performance of duties
• Conduct training programs on safe driving and working methods and procedures as required
• Train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of drivers and runners
• Prepare and maintain driver training records
• Conduct field investigations of accidents and damages, identifying training requirements
• Analyse transportation data to identify Drivers requiring additional training
• Scan all bins and cages moving in and out of the factory

Load completion and targets

• Coordinate with the Transport Controller and operations team to ensure timely and successful completion of assigned loads
• Monitor progress, address obstacles, and take necessary actions to maintain efficiency and meet targets
• Communicate any deviations from schedules or potential issues to relevant stakeholders promptly

Communication and reporting

• Proactively assist Drivers with any issues or obstructions at collection points to ensure agreed turnaround times
• Maintain effective communication with the Transport Controller, Operations team, and Drivers regarding collection schedules, load assignments, and any changes or issues
• Promptly notify clients of any changes in the collection schedule or obstructions that may affect safe and efficient collection
• Build strong relationships with clients, address inquiries, concerns, and provide exceptional

Collection and weighing procedures

• Ensure all designated bags are collected, unless Transport Controllers grant permission not to collect certain items
• Ensure vehicles are weighed before and after each collection, following company procedures
• Complete relevant checklists for collections and promptly report any defects to the Transport Controllers

Vehicle maintenance and inspections

• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles, promptly reporting any defects or maintenance requirements
• Collaborate with the maintenance team to ensure vehicles are maintained in optimal working condition, minimizing downtime
• Coordinate with the Administrator to schedule routine services or reactive maintenance for vehicles.
• Regularly follow up with the Administrator to ensure swift turnaround times for maintenance

Administrative support

• Ensure Drivers and Runners accurately complete all electronic manifests
• Collect and submit all relevant documentation, such as picking slips, dump tickets, and weighbridge certificates or slips
• Assist Transport controllers with the daily handover to the Administrator and data management.
• Support Transport Controllers with administrative tasks, including data entry, report generation, maintenance of driver logs, and other assigned duties
• Assist in obtaining DT (Disposal Ticket) numbers from the landfill

Requirements

• Minimum Matric / Grade 12
• Valid Code 14 driverxe2x80x99s license and PDP
• At least 5 yearsxe2x80x99 experience as a professional driver, particularly in the waste management or transportation industry, is highly desirable
• Experience in a leadership or supervisory role, overseeing drivers or operations, is beneficial
• Familiarity with waste management operations, including knowledge of waste collection procedures, recycling practices, and regulatory requirements, is advantageous
• Experience with vehicle maintenance and inspections, route planning, and load management is valued
