What will you do as an Instrumentation Technician?

The Instrumentation Technician will be responsible to provides functional support to the organization by performing technical hands-on activities pertaining to equipment availability, equipment reliability, inspections, preventive maintenance and continuous improvement of all instrumentation equipment on Vopak sites.

What do we expect from you as a Instrumentation Technician?
  • Matric / Grade 12
  • Light Current Engineering (N4) qualification from a recognized institution - Heavy current (advantageous)
  • Instrumentation Trade Certificate
  • Must have minimum 5 yearsxe2x80x99 working experience as a qualified artisan in a chemical storage terminal, preferably with exposure to the petrochemical industry
  • Must have a clear understanding of working with certified instrumentation equipment in hazardous areas
  • Must have experience with the maintenance, inspection and operation of petrochemical equipment and terminal and be able to work with minimal supervision and perform standby duties as the need arises
  • Must have an understand of and ability to apply and follow the health and safety regulations (OHS Act) in the work place
What does your day look like?

Some of the operational elements of the Instrumentation Technician include:
  • Ensure periodic preventive maintenance (PM) inspections and testing (calibration) on all electrical and instrumentation equipment on site in line with the terminalxe2x80x99s scheduled preventive maintenance plans.
  • Attend to breakdown/corrective maintenance (CM) for all electrical and instrumentation equipment on site as a first responder to breakdowns.
  • Supervise external instrumentation contractors who will be carrying out preventive maintenance (PM) or corrective maintenance (CM) work on any instrumentation equipment on site to ensure the work is carried out in line with legal requirements and Vopak standards.
  • Verify of completion of all work by an external instrumentation contractor on any inspection, service or repairs that will have been carried out on instrumentation equipment at the terminal and ensuring that the Work Completion Certificate is signed off by all parties, if the work has been completed to the required standard.
Your core responsibilities are:
  • Advise the Maintenance Lead and or Maintenance Planner of any observed potential future failure points on installed instrumentation equipment on site so as to proactively resolve before actual failure occurs (condition monitoring).
  • Advise the Maintenance Lead and or Maintenance Planner of required critical spares for electrical and instrumentation equipment and to ensure adequate stock of critical electrical and instrumentation equipment spares.
  • Required to carry out Standby duties and be readily available for breakdowns that occur outside normal working hours of the Maintenance Department.
  • Familiarize with reading and understanding Piping and Instrumentation Drawings (PID), loop drawings and instrumentation schematic drawings.

  • Flowmeters
  • Actuators
  • Transmitters
  • Sensors
  • Alarms
  • Vapor Recovery Units
  • Stadis & Dye skids
  • Control Loops
  • Motor Resets
  • Fault Finding on LV Systems up to 400V
