The purpose of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Nurse role is to develop, implement, monitor, and continuously improve infection prevention and control practices within the hospital. The IPC Nurse is responsible for reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections, ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements, and promoting a culture of patient and staff safety through education, surveillance, and evidence-based practices. This role plays a strategic and operational function in safeguarding patient outcomes and maintaining quality healthcare standards.
KEY WORK OUTPUT AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Develop, implement, and monitor infection prevention and control policies and procedures
Conduct ongoing surveillance of healthcare-associated infections and report trends
Investigate infection outbreaks and implement corrective and preventative actions
Monitor compliance with hand hygiene, isolation protocols, and standard precautions
Conduct environmental and clinical audits related to infection control practices
Provide IPC education and training to clinical and non-clinical staff
Ensure compliance with Department of Health regulations, accreditation standards, and hospital policies
Liaise with clinical teams, management, and external stakeholders regarding IPC matters
Maintain accurate IPC records, reports, and statistics
Advise management on infection risks and quality improvement initiatives
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of 3 years' clinical nursing experience
Proven experience in infection prevention and control within a hospital environment
Strong knowledge of South African healthcare regulations and IPC standards
Ability to analyse data, compile reports, and present findings
Strong organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills
QUALIFICATIONS
Diploma or Degree in Nursing
Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
Infection Prevention and Control qualification or certificate (essential)
