Job Description


To maintain an efficient and reliable high/medium voltage electrical infrastructure (Substations) by providing a high level electrician skills in this field.
Key Responsibility Areas

  • Undertaking the construction, maintenance, operation and repair and testing of mains and ancillary equipment.
  • Inspecting newly constructed substation plant and associated equipment
  • Obtaining oil samples from medium and high voltage power transformer, measurement transformers and tap changers for analysis purposes.
  • Installing, testing and replacing auxiliary transformers.
  • Participating in the diagnostic testing of power transformers, measuring transformers, circuit breakers and surge arresters.
  • Responsible for updating protection schematic drawings, tap change control circuits, alarm circuits and indication circuits.
  • Supervising excavation and barricading as required by the Occupational Health Safety Act (1993).
  • Attending sites where excavations, passing of abnormal loads and any other similar situations is taking place in HV substations.
  • Carrying out switching operations up to 275 000 volts
  • Removing and replacing Medium and High Voltage transformer links
  • Working on live equipment up to 440 volts
  • Maintenance of medium ad high voltage (11 kV, 33 kV, 132 kV, and 275 kV) circuit breaker with air, oil, vacuum, and gas insulation and associated equipment.
  • Topping up of oil on live high voltage transformers.
  • Erecting and commissioning of high voltage current transformer, voltage transformer and auxiliary transformers.
  • De-rusting and painting of all metal structures (gantries, masts, etc.) on high voltage substation yard.

Essential Requirements
  • Must be a qualified Electrician who has served an apprenticeship recognized by the Department of Labour or be a qualified Electrician with a Trade Test Certificate recognized by the Department of Employment and Labour.
  • Must be in possession of a NTC2 or NCV3 in Electrical Engineering from a Further Education and Training College registered with the Department of Education.
  • Valid Code EB or EC1 (10) driving license or be able to obtain one within 6 months of date of appointment.
  • Must be in possession of a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) or obtain one within 6 months of the date of appointment if required.
  • Must be trained in first aid or be trained within 6 months of date of appointment.
  • Must pass a proficiency test set by the department to prove sufficient general knowledge in the relevant field.
  • 2 Years relevant experience.
