Health & Safety Officer - SAMTRAC/SACPCMP - Mining / Construction - 6 Month FTC - East Rand Role Purpose:
The Health & Safety Officer is responsible for promoting and maintaining a positive health and safety culture across the organisation. The role ensures compliance with applicable health, safety and environmental legislation, standards, and internal policies, while supporting management, employees, contractors, and sub-contractors in the effective implementation of safe work practices.
Minimum requirements:
South African Matric
Post-matric qualification in Health & Safety
SAMTRAC certification | SACPCMP registration as a Construction Health & Safety Officer
2-5 years' experience in Health, Safety and Environmental Management within mining or construction environments
Proficient in MS Office applications
Experience implementing ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems
Experience dealing with enforcement authorities (DoL, DEA, Local Authorities)
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments and recommend appropriate risk mitigation measures.
Develop, implement, and review safe operating procedures addressing identified hazards.
Perform routine and ad hoc site inspections to verify compliance with legislative, contractual, and internal requirements.
Recommend and implement corrective and preventative actions to address unsafe conditions and practices.
Assist in the development and implementation of HSE strategies, policies, and procedures.
Maintain accurate records of inspections, audits, incidents, and corrective actions.
Record, investigate, and analyse incidents and accidents, including trend analysis and statistical reporting.
Monitor legislative developments and ensure organisational compliance with all applicable HSE laws and regulations.
Prepare management reports, safety bulletins, newsletters, and toolbox talk materials.
Ensure the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of plant and equipment.
Provide specialist HSE advice relating to fire safety, hazardous substances, noise exposure, machinery safeguarding, and occupational health risks.
Liaise with main contractors and subcontractors to ensure alignment with company HSE requirements and systems.
Convene, facilitate, and chair Health & Safety Committee meetings.
Engage with enforcement and regulatory authorities as required.
