This role oversees the full strategic and operational management of soil-based crop production across the business. The incumbent will ensure optimal land use, resource planning, and production performance through sound agronomic decision-making, data-driven forecasting, and strong team leadership. The Head of Soil Farming aligns production plans with sales forecasts, manages seed and input procurement, and leads long-term land and crop rotation strategies to achieve both commercial and sustainability goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan how all soil-based land is used to get the best results from each area.
Ensure crop rotations and planting schedules protect soil health and support consistent production.
Use land calculator to model and allocate planting areas according to soil condition, seasonal demand, and sales forecasting data.
Forecast production needs using historical data, sales trends, and rejected sales to accurately plan future planting schedules.
Balance productivity, sustainability, and cost efficiency when planning land use.
2.
Take accountability for seed ordering, ensuring correct lettuce and crop varieties are sourced at the right time and in the right quantities based on sales forecasting models.
Review planting and production performance to refine future seed ordering and variety selection.
Manage the procurement of fertilizers and chemicals, in line with production schedules and compliance standards.
Ensure that all products meet regulatory, food safety, and internal technical standards.
Collaborate closely with the Technical Department for guidance on fertilizers, chemicals, soil health, and nutrition.

Oversee all soil farming activities -- stock management, logistics, planting, weeding, irrigation, pest and disease control, and harvesting.
Track progress using data and digital tools to quickly identify and fix issues.
Coordinate with logistics and the packhouse so that supply matches demand.

Use advanced Excel models and analytical tools to manage production data, yield forecasts, and cost performance.
Translate data insights into practical decisions that improve efficiency and reduce waste.
Prepare weekly and monthly reports on land use, input costs, productivity, and forecast accuracy.
Identify trends and risks early and develop mitigation plans.

Lead and support a large production team of managers, supervisors, and field workers.
Set clear expectations and performance standards, providing regular coaching, technical training, and development opportunities.
Encourage teamwork and good communication across all departments.
Build a culture of accountability, learning, and problem-solving.
Strategic thinking and predictive capability, with the ability to forecast production and market needs accurately.
Expert agronomic knowledge, particularly in lettuce and leafy green varieties, soil fertility, and crop rotation planning.
Strong understanding of fertilizer, chemical, and biological product management.
Excellent leadership and communication skills, capable of motivating large teams and collaborating across functions.
High competency in data-driven decision-making and digital production management tools.
Strong organisational and project management abilities, able to handle multiple workstreams simultaneously.
Excellent report writing and presentation skills for management-level reporting.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree or higher in Agronomy, Agricultural Management, Crop Science, or a related discipline.
Minimum 8-10 years of experience in large-scale vegetable or field crop production, preferably with lettuce or leafy greens.
Demonstrated experience in strategic farm planning, forecasting, and resource management.
Proven track record in managing large teams and complex production systems.
Basic knowledge of Global G.A.P., ISO 22000, and general food safety standards preferred.
Valid driver's license and willingness to travel as required.
WORK CONDITIONS
Primarily site-based.
Combination of office and field work requiring flexibility and endurance.
Seasonal demands may require extended hours during planting or harvesting periods.
Regular interaction with various internal and external stakeholders.
