General Engineering Supervisor Mechanical

Purpose of Role

To manage and maintain all infrastructure and assets in the relevant section by applying a standard best practice approach to equipment maintenance through system inspections, condition monitoring as well as system and infrastructure design for the workshop area to achieve optimum productivity. To guide, support coach and monitor a team in order to improve team performance and contribution by ensuring adherence to the Health and Safety Act. (HSE) and improve performance

Role Context

Operational Management

  • Manage the implementation and alignment of engineering strategies across the plant by overseeing the execution of operational plans in order to optimise performance and ensure cost efficiency
  • Keep abreast of changes in relevant guidelines and other legislation, to make recommendations where policies, processes and/or procedures require amendment
  • Manage the implementation of policies, processes, Operational and maintenance procedures that are within the respective Department aimed at the enhancement of service delivery and overall productivity within the Department
  • Develop and implement maintenance processes and procedures for the relevant section to drive an efficient and safe operation of mining equipment and infrastructure
  • Manage the implementation of plans to minimise equipment downtime and ensure continued productivity by creating and implementing predictive, preventative, and corrective maintenance standards, processes and procedures
  • Prepare and document reports related to maintenance activities by recording work orders, equipment performance data and maintenance schedule to keep an up-to-date maintenance schedule
  • Conduct cost analysis by comparing repairs versus replacement of parts to ensure an accurate costing, time, and impact on production
  • Provide support to service providers with regards to installation/repairs of operational equipment to ensure alignment to the Tharisa Mineralsxe2x80x99 maintenance strategy and standards
  • Collaborate with suppliers, vendors and engineering professionals to source and procure parts, services and equipment and ensure cost-effectiveness and quality.
  • Provide critical support services for attaining the required assets performance targets within the plant
  • Identify improvement opportunities and implement these where feasible and maintain the new standards of performance.
  • Ensure work ethics are of such a nature that workers continuously strive towards improving their performance
  • Compile own budget and manage the sectionxe2x80x99s expenditure within the approved budget to ensure effective cost control and saving
Resource Management
  • Provide input into required changes in resources (financial or non-financial) to enable the achievement of team and/or own objectives
  • Determine resource needs of the team and/or own area of work to achieve business outcomes
  • Request and allocate required assets and/or resources for the fulfilment of work objectives to guarantee quality outputs
  • Monitor the use of assets and resources within the team and own area of responsibility, to ensure assets and resources are consistently and appropriately utilised and managed.
  • Provide staff with day-to-day direction and tasks aligned with Departmental procedures, to enable the usage of less resources more efficiently
  • Identify formal engineering training and development needs and conduct regular practical training and coaching to ensure required skills are obtained and assessed continuously to improve performance and correct shortcomings
Stakeholder Relations
  • Communicate with all relevant Departments on issues of the area of speciality. Liaise across the relevant Departments by engaging with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure all stakeholders remain abreast of Departmental objectives, any potential derailers are appropriately managed and duplication of work is avoided
  • Communicate with internal and/or external stakeholders, where required, to achieve work objectives and to maintain relationships
  • Liaise with other departments including production, engineering, and procurement to coordinate maintenance activities, share information and address issues that impact mining operations to minimise disruption of production
  • Provide a safe and healthy working environment where employees and Service Providers can deliver their output within a controlled risk environment.
  • Monitor that Service Providersxe2x80x99 outputs are optimized for economical sustainability and their payments are managed according to the project plan and retention agreement
  • Liaise with stakeholders to provide relevant and specialized technical support and input for operations and projects
  • Build, manage and maintain healthy relations with stakeholders to assist in the achievement of sectional goals
Compliance, Risk and Safety
  • Manage the implementation and adherence to safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and environmental standards to ensure a safe working environment in line with the Mining Health and Safety Act (MHSA)
  • Develop a risk register to keep record of potential risks and implement a work ethos across the section that is committed to safeguarding employee safety, health and wellbeing and take remedial actions where necessary to minimise incidents
  • Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments and influence compliance with all relevant regulations, mining laws, by-laws, and safety standards to promote a strong safety culture and ensure risk escalation within the section
  • Manage equipment handling by putting in place control measure to ensure equipment handed back to the operation is in a safe and operable condition
  • Drive the improvement of plant conditions in support of our vision of ZERO Harm.
  • Plan, implement and manage SHE interventions while taking cognizance of production targets to ensure minimal production interruption
  • Keep environmental impact within statutory requirements to ensure compliance with statutory requirements
People Management
  • Create and maintain a conducive work environment by appropriately applying Human Resources policies and procedures to ensure optimum performance is realised for the benefit of the Department and, by extension, the organisation.
  • Lead the team according to TMxe2x80x99s leadership principles and values throughout the entire employee life cycle (performance management, reward etc) to ensure, inter alia, a high-performance culture
  • Manage plant personnel, monitor performance, and provide regular feedback to address any performance issues.
  • Create a high performing team and conducive employee relations by identifying skills gaps, recommend development plans and ensuring staff are trained and equipped to perform their duties.
  • Provide staff with day-to-day direction and tasks aligned with Departmental procedures, to enable the usage of less resources more efficiently.
  • Promote skills versatility in the section and ensure that skills matrix is developed in line with the employees IDPxe2x80x99s.
  • Optimize Human Resources in a manner that achieves maximum output by the section
Minimum Requirements

Qualifications:
  • Grade 12
  • National Diploma in Engineering (NQF 6) or N6 with a Trade Test / S4
  • GCC Certificate Mine and Works (Advantageous)
  • Management / Supervisory development course will be beneficial (advantageous)
Job specific experience:
  • 5 -8 years combined experience as a maintenance planner / maintenance supervisor
  • Acting experience on a Maintenance Superintendent and / or General Engineering Supervisor (GES) level
  • Basic computer literacy and planning experience essential
  • Medically fit xe2x80x93 meet fitness standards.
  • Valid Driverxe2x80x99s National Road Act (NRA) license (Code E / EB etc)
