The External Sales Representative is responsible for managing and growing an existing customer base while actively identifying and developing new business opportunities within the assigned sales territory. The role requires a results-driven, customer-focused individual with strong numeracy skills and the ability to conduct accurate costings while achieving sales targets. Key Responsibilities Customer Management Existing Accounts Travel within the allocated sales territory to meet with customers and prospects. Conduct daily customer calls and face-to-face meetings. Build, maintain, and strengthen long-term relationships with existing customers. Maintain accurate records of customer interactions, leads, and accounts. Educate customers on product and service offerings and their financial and operational benefits. Follow up on all large enquiries from allocated customers. Provide exceptional customer service to ensure client satisfaction and retention. New Business Development Identify, research, and qualify new customer opportunities within the allocated area. Proactively approach and establish relationships with new customers. Prepare and manage initial quotations and pricing discussions. Focus on researching and targeting qualified leads to achieve new customer acquisition targets. Monitor competitor activity, market trends, and new products to identify sales opportunities. Attend industry events and networking opportunities to generate leads. Sales Execution & Reporting Prepare and deliver professional sales presentations highlighting product features and benefits. Negotiate pricing and contractual terms to achieve profitable sales. Monitor sales performance against targets and implement corrective actions where required. Manage a defined sales territory, including scheduling appointments and travel. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of sales activities and client interactions in the CRM system. Conduct costings using the companys costing system with a strong focus on accuracy. Internal Collaboration & Procedures Attend weekly marketing meetings and monthly/weekly customer review meetings. Work closely with internal teams to align on customer requirements and sales strategies. Support brand-building initiatives in collaboration with the marketing department.
Key Requirements Education & Experience Grade 12 / Matric with Mathematics (essential). Relevant tertiary qualification (advantageous but not essential). 25 years experience in external sales or a related role. Proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales targets. Industry knowledge and internal business experience will be advantageous. Computer literacy with working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Skills & Competencies Strong numeracy skills with the ability to understand pricing and costings. Comfortable performing cost calculations and margin analysis. Proficient in Excel, Word, and CRM systems. Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills. Analytical and problem-solving ability. Highly self-motivated, target-driven, and results-oriented. Strong hunter mindset with a focus on new business development. Ability to adapt to changing market conditions and customer needs. Valid drivers license with own vehicle. Willingness and ability to travel extensively within the sales territory.
