Our client is an African, independent, majority black-owned and managed venture capital platform. They thrive on accelerating the African tech ecosystem. The company manages an institutional South African Venture Capital Fund. They run a hybrid solution where they invest into other South African Venture capital funds and co investment into tech enabled businesses.
They now seek an ESG specialist to join their team. Brand new role. Report to the CEO.
JOB DESCRIPTION WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

• You will be responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring company fund I's ESG strategy;
• You will be responsible for integrating ESG considerations into the investment process, ensuring compliance with sustainability goals and driving measurable impact across portfolio companies;
• You will be required to contribute to the growth and success of early-stage startups and emerging technology companies in South Africa;
• ESG framework implementation:

• You will be required to implement a robust ESG framework tailored to the fund's investment strategy and goals;
• You will be required to align ESG policies with globally recognised standards such as UNPRI, SASB, and SDGs;
• You will be required to regularly review and update the ESG framework based on evolving market trends and regulatory requirements;
• ESG integration:

• You will be required to conduct ESG due diligence for potential investments, evaluating risks and opportunities;
• You will be required to provide recommendations to the investment committee on ESG considerations for proposed transactions;
• You will be required to work with the investment team to ensure ESG factors are considered in valuation and decision-making processes;
• Portfolio management support and reporting:

• You will be required to monitor ESG performance of portfolio companies and recommend strategies for improvement;
• You will be required to establish KPI's to measure the impact of ESG initiatives across the portfolio;
• You will be required to compile ESG data and prepare detailed reports for investors, adhering to regulatory and reporting frameworks;
• Stakeholder engagement:

• You will be required to serve as the primary point of contact for investors on ESG-related inquiries;
• You will be required to conduct ESG workshops and training sessions for portfolio companies and internal teams;
• You will be required to represent the fund at industry events, ESG forums, and conferences;
• Compliance and risk management:

• You will be required to ensure portfolio companies comply with applicable environmental and social regulations;
• You will be required to identify and mitigate ESG-related risks across investments.

CORE COMPETENCIES REQUIRED, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

• You have strong analytical skills and ability to assess ESG risks and opportunities;
• You have excellent communication (verbal and written) skills in English, with experience in presenting to stakeholders;
• You are proficient in ESG tools and software;
• You have a passion for sustainability and driving measurable impact;
• You have a collaborative mindset with the ability to work in teams and with various stakeholders;
• You have a keen eye for detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

• You have a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science, sustainability, or a related field; advanced degree - this is preferred;
• You have certifications such as CFA ESG Investing, GRI, or equivalent - this is highly desirable;
• You have a minimum of 3 years current, relevant experience in ESG consulting, sustainability, or responsible investing, ideally within a private equity or venture capital environment;
• You have proven experience conducting ESG due diligence and implementing frameworks;
• You are familiar with ESG reporting standards, tools and benchmarks.
