Job Description

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Data Centre Operations Manager will be responsible for managing data centre projects, operational staff, and overseeing their daily tasks, focusing on maintaining optimal uptime, performance, and security of the data centre infrastructure.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Managing Operational Staff



Actively motivate and lead the operational teams to foster a high-performance, results-driven culture, ensuring maximum productivity. Provide teams with strict deadlines to complete installations and consistently drive them to ensure those deadlines are met. Review team performance in terms of workmanship - are installations completed according to the client and ASI Connect - ICS specifications and standards. Discuss any employees with a poor attitude or that negatively impacts the team environment with the Business Unit Manager or Branch Manager, to determine a strategy to deal with the employee. Continuously upskill operational employees to ensure sound knowledge of technical skills and installation standards, specifically related to the data centre environment.

Scheduling & Coordination



Schedule jobs and daily tasks for the Operational Teams to maximise productivity. Ensure that job scheduling is done in such a way that teams are utilised to play to their strenghts and work where they are most effective. Communicate scheduling with relevant stakeholders (stores, admin, teams, safety, client, site security etc) Ensure that the coordination of scheduling with clients takes place, to ensure availability of client resources on the day that the job is scheduled to take place (e.g., access approvals, pre-staging requirements). Ensure that all operational teams are fully briefed and familiar with client data centre/site-specific requirements regarding:
- Access Protocols: Security procedures, escort requirements, and necessary access card/credential checks.
- Safety: Client-specific safety policies, emergency procedures, and hazardous work requirements.
- Work Window Checks: Strict adherence to pre-approved work times and change control procedures.

Constantly monitor the flow of work, to identify potential problems and challenges before they occur and adjust planning and scheduling accordingly. (A poor performer in this instance will constantly have to manage in crisis mode, due to poor planning and foresight.

Management of Resources



Schedules and manages all resources required for a project / job, ensuring procurement of materials is done timeously and effectively, to minimise wastage or unneccesary purchasing of materials. Be aware of stock levels (ensure minimum levels are maintained) to ensure that stock is available for installations and break/fix requirements. Ensure installations are completed in a timely manner, by effectively manages and controls the usage of materials and man hours. Provide teams with deadlines to complete installations and push them to ensure that those deadlines are met. Follow the necessary procedure to address a team that is underperforming - constantly not meeting deadlines or not reaching team targets. Overtime is authorised in accordance with Company Policy and Project Plans. Minimise overtime of teams by ensuring proper planning and resource management takes place.

Quality Assurance and Client Management



Regularly inspects sites to ensure quality assurance as per client requirements. Continuously inspect the quality of work on site: During an installation, to ensure that any problems are corrected as soon as possible. After an installation, to sign off on the Quality Assurance documents for the installation. Spend the majority of time on site meeting with clients, inspecting job sites and assisting the teams as required. Introduce self to clients and build relationships with clients on site to ensure client satisfaction with installations and to promote future business from the client.

Managing Projects



Accurately draft a project plan and identify critical areas to discuss with the relevant stakeholders (Client, Project Leader, Management etc). Ensure that the Project Plan is constantly kept up to date for review by client project planning teams. Attends project meetings and receive regular feedback from Project/Team Leaders to update Project Plans. Provide guidance to Team Leaders with job related issues - assist them in identifying the issue and how to resolve it. Provide resources as required, but allow the Team Leader to see the job through - do not take over difficult installations and neglect other duties, unless absolutely necessary..

Administration



Review all documentation relevant to installations received from Team Leaders, before the documents are submitted to the Admin Department. Continuously review the WIP of an installation, ensuring that the installation remains profitable with favourable margins. Once sign off for a job has been received, ensure WIP is checked and finalised before the job is closed and invoiced. Ensure project / job handover documentation is completed and provided to client and that any final concerns or changes are completed. Documentation includes, but is not limited to: Site plans and drawings; Test results; Certification documents Ensure that company property is safeguarded by doing monthly checks on toolboxes, toolkits, hand tools, drills, testers, splice machines, ladders etc and ensuring that proper procedure is followed if property is lost or damaged.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent Minimum of 5 years' experience in similar position within the data centre environment A degree or diploma would be an advantage Must have extensive working knowledge of telecommunications Strong managerial, leadership and conflict management skills Must have strong technical and product knowledge Must have a strong understanding of an operations profitability and what effects it Must have a valid driver's licence and own vehicle Must be willing to travel and work overtime Must have a valid passport Must have basic knowledge of Basic Employment Condition Act, Labour Law and Occupational Health and Safety Act Must be proficient in MS Office Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Afrikaans
