Job Description

The company currently has a vacant position for a Commissioning Technician, to be based in Cape Town.

1. Role Objective



The Commissioning Technician is responsible for advanced commissioning, diagnostics, maintenance, and mechanical repairs on Rolls-Royce Power Systems / mtu diesel and gas engines (500 kW to 3,300 kW), associated automation systems, and full powertrain solutions including gensets, Kinetic Power Systems, Battery Power Systems, and engine packages used in industrial, power-generation, and marine applications.

This includes work on electrical, electronic, and marine-related control interfaces, ensuring proper configuration, integration, and operational readiness across land-based and marine environments.

The role requires standby duty, extended onsite assignments, and frequent travel across South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. Technicians must maintain high standards of safety, professionalism, and OEM compliance.

2. Key Responsibilities



A. Commissioning & System Start-Up



Perform full commissioning of mtu diesel and gas engines, including calibration, functional testing, parameter setup, and performance verification.

Commission automation, control, and protection systems such as PLC-based systems, CANbus, MDEC/EDC/ASC platforms, HMI panels, and application-specific interfaces (including marine vessels and industrial control rooms).

Validate integration with complete powertrain systems, gensets, power modules, propulsion packages, and auxiliary equipment.

Ensure compliance with Rolls-Royce Power Systems standards and customer requirements.

B. Diagnostics, Mechanical Repairs & Maintenance



Conduct advanced mechanical, electrical, and electronic troubleshooting and repairs across all engine applications, including marine engines where applicable.

Perform overhauls, subsystem repairs (fuel injection, turbochargers, lubrication systems, cooling circuits), and electrical harness diagnostics.

Diagnose and repair application-specific electronic interfaces, including vessel alarms, monitoring systems, and engine-to-bridge communication systems where relevant.

Execute scheduled and unscheduled maintenance tasks to OEM requirements.

C. Field Service & Customer Support



Provide onsite support at customer facilities such as mining operations, power plants, industrial sites, and marine vessels or port-based installations.

Deliver professional technical guidance, ensuring safe, compliant, and customer-focused service.

Participate in standby rotation for after-hours support across all applications (industrial, power generation, and marine).

Support job scoping, parts identification, and coordination with the Field Service Supervisor and service administrators.

Identify and report additional repair opportunities to drive proactive service delivery.

D. Reporting, Compliance & Documentation



Complete accurate service reports, commissioning documents, checklists, measurement logs, and electronic records daily.

Perform risk assessments (preferably through the mtu Go! Care app) before starting any work.

Support safety file requirements, including method statements and customer-specific risk assessments.

Ensure compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 17001, ISO 18001, internal warranty processes, and OEM procedures.

Maintain proper care of tools, PPE, diagnostic equipment, and company assets.

Ensure warranty and core-return parts are labelled and submitted correctly.

Submit time sheets, vehicle inspections, and administrative documentation on time.

E. Teamwork, Professional Conduct & Continuous Improvement



Support and mentor junior technicians in both field and workshop environments across all applications, including marine when required.

Participate in service desk meetings and contribute to technical updates and continuous improvement.

Represent the company professionally at all times with customers and stakeholders.

Engage in continuous learning through training, self-study, and OEM technical platforms.

Provide daily activity updates via approved communication channels.

5. Qualifications & Experience



Valid driver's licence

National Qualification in Millwright, Diesel Mechanic, Marine Engineering, or equivalent

3-5 years experience in diesel/gas engine commissioning, repairs, or field service

Experience across industrial, power-generation, and marine environments advantageous

Familiarity with marine control interfaces and vessel-based systems beneficial

Valid passport and willingness to travel extensively across Africa

Ability to work extended onsite assignments and standby duties
