Certified Diesel Generator Maintenance Technician

Job Description

1. Job Purpose



To perform preventive maintenance, fault diagnosis, repairs, and testing of diesel-powered generators to ensure reliable and continuous operation of power systems at client sites.

2. Key Responsibilities



Conduct scheduled

preventive maintenance

on diesel generators (oil, fuel, air, and coolant systems). Inspect, diagnose, and repair

mechanical and electrical faults

in engines, alternators, and control panels. Replace consumables such as

oil filters, fuel filters, air filters, coolant filters

, and other service parts. Test generator output, voltage, frequency, and control systems for compliance with operational specifications. Maintain accurate

service logs, checklists, and maintenance records

. Troubleshoot and repair

fuel systems, cooling systems, and starting systems

(batteries, starters, etc.). Perform

load testing

and ensure generator synchronization when required. Ensure compliance with

OHS Act

and company

safety standards

during all maintenance activities. Liaise with customers to provide technical feedback and recommendations for equipment performance improvement. Identify and report potential equipment failures or safety hazards. Support installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of generator sets when needed.

3. Minimum Qualifications & Certifications



Trade Test Certificate

(Diesel Mechanic / Electrician) - MERSETA, NAMB, or equivalent accredited body.*

N3 - N6 in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

(advantageous). Valid

driver's license

(Code 8 or above).

Certification/Training

in generator systems from recognized manufacturers (e.g., Cummins, Perkins, Volvo Penta, Deutz, FG Wilson, or Caterpillar) preferred. Valid

Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)

training certificate (advantageous).

4. Experience Requirements



Minimum

3-5 years' hands-on experience

in diesel generator maintenance and fault-finding. Experience with

medium to large generator sets (50 kVA - 1000 kVA+)

. Familiarity with

ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch)

systems, control panels, and battery management. Proven record of performing

field service and emergency call-outs

. Ability to interpret

electrical schematics

and mechanical diagrams.

5. Key Competencies



Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills (mechanical & electrical). Knowledge of

fuel injection systems, alternators, governors, and AVR controls

. Excellent communication and customer service skills. Attention to detail and commitment to safety. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Basic computer literacy for reporting and logging service data.

6. Working Conditions



On-site and field-based work, including remote client locations. Occasional after-hours and weekend call-outs. Exposure to noise, oil, grease, and outdoor weather conditions (protective gear provided).

Pay: R13000,00 - R20000,00 per month
