Job Description


Our Client, the South African Sugar Association (SASA) has a permanent vacancy for a Boilermaker in the Engineering Department of their Sugar Markets and Logistics Division (SM&L), based at the Sugar Terminal in Maydon Wharf, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal

SM&L is an ISO 9001:2015 and SANAS 17025 accredited bulk raw sugar handling and exporting facility that serves ten mills in the Kwa-Zulu Natal region. The facility can store in excess of 500 000 tons of sugar and includes a molasses mixing plant, weighing equipment, truck and rail discharging facilities, ship loading apparatus and approximately 3.5 km's of conveyer belts.

Reporting to the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman, the successful applicant will be responsible for attending to preventative plant maintenance and to contribute to the growth and effectiveness of SM&L by maintaining all plant used for the intake and dispatch of sugar. In addition, the objectives would be as follows:

  • Boiler making works co-ordination.
  • Supervision of the team
  • Boiler making applications:
  • preparatory applications
  • fabrication of new works and maintenance
  • Welding
  • Completing of administration including job cards
  • Safety and Housekeeping
  • Installing and repairing pipework for steam, water, and molasses.
  • Using gas or electrical welding to conduct above tasks.
  • Assists with mechanical work on major breakdowns.
  • Assists with minor conveyor belt repairs.
  • Performs other general duties as requested at or below the skill level of this position.
  • Acts pro-actively to achieve performance targets.
  • Checks that machines and equipment are fully functional and ensures that daily maintenance is conducted.
  • Be prepared to work extended hours as and when required for the completion of work or projects.
  • Acts pro-actively if machines or equipment stop functioning to achieve productivity targets.
  • Responsible for coordinating the ship loading operation.
  • Responsible for the control of the supply of sugar during the ship loading process.
  • Responsible for controlling the transfer of raw sugar into the ship Effectively interface

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The Boilermaker will execute specialized boiler making trade applications to fabricate new metal structures or maintain existing metal fixtures by preparing sketches and templates, organizing of materials and, using cutting, bending and threading tools and Shielded Metal Arc Welding or Gas Metal Arc Welding techniques to cut, shape, assemble and weld various types and gauges of metal sheets or, angle/ flat bars or, tubes and, fits or threads pipes or other related fittings.
  • As the sugar receipting operation is conducted around the clock during the course of the season the incumbent will also be required to perform standby duties on a rotational basis approximately once in every three weeks to attend to mechanical breakdowns that occur outside of regular work hours.
  • Ship loading is another feature of this position involving ad hoc shiftwork. Ship loading is a twenty-four-hour continuous operation when in progress, and the job incumbent may be given duties such as shift supervisor, panel operator, and tunnel operator etc.
Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:
  • Matric Certificate
  • Trade Test Qualification as a Boilermaker
  • Minimum of 3 years boiler making experience in a heavy industrial environment
  • Code EB driver's license
Skills, Knowledge, and Qualities:
  • Knowledge of occupational safety, health and environment legislation, regulations, and codes of good practice
  • Knowledge and application of relevant maintenance regulations, building regulations and specifications and industry standards.
  • Understand and apply basic plumbing principles including pressure and flow principles.
  • Fabricate sheet metal components, including sheet metal joints.
