Job Description


CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

To facilitate and administer the learning and teaching process for students in modules presented by the Nelson Mandela University at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. To participate in and contribute to research and innovation, postgraduate student supervision, contribute to community, discipline and professional engagement as well as being involved in the core functions of the University. Lecture subjects at UG and PG level including but not limited to Mechanical and Machine Design, Strength of Materials, Advanced Manufacturing Systems, Process Control and Instrumentation and Supervise Mechatronics Projects at an Honours level and Post Graduate level.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Facilitate the learning and teaching programmes, processes, and outcomes of the department.
  • Participate in and conduct to publishing of research and innovation.
  • Supervise postgraduate students and projects.
  • Perform academic, community and discipline engagement.
  • Perform administration.
  • Contribute to quality of the programmes and programme reviews.
  • Ensure that delivery of the modules comply with professional body requirements and participate and professional body accreditation processes and visits.
CORE COMPETENCIES
  • In depth knowledge of the theory and application in the Mechatronics discipline.
  • Ability to facilitate learning at undergraduate level and potential to contribute at postgraduate level.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Have contributed or have the potential to contribute to the creation of knowledge by virtue of published research and involvement in relevant engagement activities.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team.
REQUIREMENTS

Associate Professor
  • Bsc/BEng in Engineering in Mechatronics or Electromechanical Engineering
  • MSc/MEng in Engineering in Mechatronics or Electromechanical Engineering
  • Doctorate in Engineering (Mechatronics/Electromechanical Engineering)
  • 3 years as Senior Lecturer with demonstrable experience in the core functions of the job; preferably in a higher education, science council or relevant industry environment
  • Proven accredited research output record.
  • Successfully supervised a sustained number of Honours and Masters or Doctoral postgraduate students to completion.
  • Record of successful grants/funding applications.
Full Professor
  • Bsc/BEng in Engineering in Mechatronics or Electromechanical Engineering
  • MSc/MEng in Engineering in Mechatronics or Electromechanical Engineering
  • Doctorate in Engineering (Mechatronics/Electromechanical Engineering)
  • 4 years as Associate Professor with extensive demonstrable experience in the core functions of the job, preferably in a higher education, science council or relevant industry environment.
  • Proven accredited research output record and/or evidence of accredited innovative outputs.
  • Recognised nationally and internationally.
  • Successfully supervised a sustained number of Masters and Doctoral postgraduate students to completion.
  • Record of mentoring new academics and early-career researchers.
  • Plays a leadership role Record of successful grants/funding applications.
Further Recommendation:
  • Actively engaged in research as leader of a team or entity.
  • Evidence of partnerships and collaboration at national and/or international level.
  • Evidence of partnership and collaboration.
  • Evidence of engagement with industry, discipline or community projects.
  • NRF rating, in the process of applying for NRF rating, or eligible for NRF rating within 3 years of appointment.
All positions: Professional registration with ECSA as an Engineer for the position OR eligibility to register within a period of one year for the position.
