Abagold has a vacancy for an Assistant Hatchery Manager in our Hatchery.
The Assistant Hatchery Manager undertakes effective management of the Hatchery and leads the Section Managers, Supervisors, Specialists and Hatchery Team in abalone spat production to optimally grow abalone spat in captivity to be transferred to the farm when the correct size in weight is obtained.
Duties & Responsibilities
Conducting frequent and effective communication with all applicable team and staff members
Communicate effectively at all levels, i.e. to superiors and sub-ordinates.
Support training of new staff from time to time.
Coach Section managers, Supervisors, and employees where and when required to ensure that they meet performance expectations and performance standards of department.
Ensure that safety and bio-security requirements are adhered to consistently. Rectifies exceptions immediately and takes corrective action as may be required.
Support any research projects that may be underway within the Hatchery.
General care and enhancement of all aspects of spat production as per schedule and cycle provided, whilst applying all active procedures in a consistent manner
Any Hatchery activities beyond the cycle that may occur and present itself as well as any other tasks that may be passed on by senior management.
Needs to be able to measure the effectiveness of the set KPIs within a collaborative team setting.
Communication and collaboration with other departments
Comply with data integrity and security policies.
Administrative duties such as data capturing and the interpretation of data.
Assist Hatchery Managers with the preparation of documents for diatoms rating, RIS, Deplating, sorting to transfer.
Maintain employee biometrics for payroll purposes.
Assist Hatchery SYSPRO needs.
Assist Hatchery Managers with all data-related issues and queries including farm walk stock take.
Assist with all HR administration (training registers, clothing orders, Toolbox talks)
Desired Experience & Qualification
Skills and Requirements:
Grade 12 (Matric)
Experience in Aquafarming is essential
Must have worked in a supervisory role for at least 18 months
Relevant Degree in Animal Production/Aquaculture Production Management qualification would be advantageous
Strong Leadership and Staff Management Skills
Expected to work weekends, public holidays, and overtime as required.
Expected to be on standby as required.
