Asset Manager Renewable Energy Portfolio

Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

Job Description

Are you an experienced renewable energy asset manager who enjoys operating at the intersection of technical performance, financial optimisation, and stakeholder governance?
We're working confidentially with an established renewable energy platform seeking an Asset Manager to take full accountability for the long-term value, performance, and risk management of a multi-asset operating portfolio.
This is a senior role for someone who thinks beyond operations - someone who treats each asset as a long-term investment, not just a power plant.
About the Organisation:
Our client is a privately backed renewable energy owner-operator with a growing portfolio of utility-scale assets across Southern Africa.
They operate with:

  • lean, senior decision-making structures
  • strong commercial discipline
  • long-term capital commitments
  • high expectations around governance, compliance, and optimisation
The culture is investment-led, performance-driven, and accountability-focused, rather than development-heavy or corporate.
The Opportunity
As Asset Manager, you will assume end-to-end responsibility for asset performance across the full operating lifecycle - from post-construction handover through steady-state operations.
You'll be accountable for:
  • financial outcomes
  • operational performance
  • contractual compliance
  • stakeholder confidence
  • risk management
  • value optimisation initiatives
You will lead and coordinate technical, commercial, and financial workstreams, ensuring assets consistently perform in line with (or above) their investment case.
Key Accountability Areas:
Asset Performance & Optimisation
  • Define and continuously refine asset management strategies
  • Monitor operational availability, production, and downtime
  • Lead root-cause analysis and performance improvement initiatives
  • Drive optimisation through technical upgrades, process improvements, and contract leverage
Financial & Commercial Oversight
  • Own asset-level P&L, cash flow, and budget performance
  • Maintain and optimise operating financial models
  • Identify and execute value-enhancing initiatives (e.g. refinancing, cost optimisation, performance uplift)
  • Monitor variances against base-case assumptions and forecasts
Contract & Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with all material project agreements
  • Manage interfaces with delivery partners, service providers, and counterparties
  • Oversee warranties, guarantees, insurance, and risk transfer mechanisms
  • Maintain a robust asset-level risk management framework
Stakeholder & Governance Management
  • Act as primary interface with lenders, shareholders, advisors, and key external stakeholders
  • Prepare and present board-level reporting packs
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant reporting across all agreements
  • Maintain integrity of disclosures and decision records
Team & Process Leadership
  • Lead and develop the asset management function
  • Establish scalable tools, templates, and governance processes
  • Embed lessons learned back into both operating and future assets
HSE & ESG Oversight
  • Ensure strong safety, environmental, and social governance across all assets
  • Promote a proactive risk-reduction culture
  • Oversee community, enterprise development, and social investment commitments
Background & Experience:
  • Degree in Engineering, Finance, or related discipline
  • 7-12+ years' experience in renewable energy asset management, infrastructure investments, or operational finance
  • Proven experience managing operating renewable assets (wind, solar, storage, or hybrids)
  • Strong understanding of project finance, operating models, and long-term value drivers
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with boards, lenders, and senior stakeholders
  • Track record of leading small, high-performance teams
  • Strong grasp of HSE, ESG, and regulatory compliance in infrastructure environments
Personal Attributes:
  • Ownership mindset - treats assets as investments, not projects
  • Commercially astute with strong analytical depth
  • Calm, structured, and credible with senior stakeholders
  • Detail-driven without losing strategic perspective
  • Comfortable operating with autonomy and accountability
