Job Description


The Academic Staff Development Programme (ASDP) is a response towards addressing challenges in the South African Higher Education system. The ASDP intends to identify and nurture academic talent early in the academic development trajectory, and to support newly recruited academics to develop teaching expertise; develop research skills, including scientific publication skills.
Appointment within the ASDP will be made such that staff equity targets are met, with preference to black and/or women South African citizens. To be eligible for selection for an ASDP post, applicants must meet the following criteria, in addition to meeting the minimum criteria specified for the post.

  • Be a registered post graduate student studying towards a doctoral or Master's Degree.
  • Show interest in becoming an academic at CPUT.
  • Be 40 years or younger.
  • Be willing to undertake Learning and Teaching responsibilities within the department.
The purpose of this post is to support the faculty and the department in pursuit of its academic and research objectives which include teaching according to a set syllabus; undertake research and innovation; contribute to curriculum development and design; engage in work integrated learning, and develop service-learning activities, support students at all levels, prioritising first year students through active participation in the First Year Experience and Academic Advising programmes. The successful candidate will be developed to be a future academic in the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Minimum requirements

Junior Lecturer
  • A Post Graduate Diploma or Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Honours) in Geomatics or related field
  • Applicants must be South African citizens who are 40 years or younger.
  • Applicants must be registered towards a Masters degree.
Lecturer
  • A Masters degree in Geomatics or related field
  • Applicants must be South African citizens who are 40 years or younger
  • Applicants must be registered towards a Doctoral degree
Recommendations:
Preference will be given to candidates that have shown satisfactory progress towards the completion of their studies.
Applicants must have completed their undergraduate studies at CPUT

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
  • Participation in all components of the ASDP during the years of employment at CPUT
  • Lecture at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Geomatics discipline
  • Participate in academic development and administration
  • Participate in curriculum and programme development
  • Participate in Quality Assurance Activities
  • Participate in research activities
  • Assisting students with projects and productions
  • Contribution to co-ordination of student projects and productions
  • Contribution to departmental projects and productions
  • Contribution to departmental WIL and service-learning projects and activities
  • Develop and maintain linkages with industry and professional bodies
  • Supervise and mentor both undergraduate and post graduate students
  • Assist with marketing and recruitment activities
  • Perform other academic and support functions as may be required by the Head of Department
  • Register with the South African Geomatics council as a candidate in the relevant category
  • Attend conferences and publish in accredited journals or conference proceedings as required by the university for academics

Additional * Applicants must ensure that they complete the studies they have enrolled for within the 3 years of the ASDP.
  • Applicants will have to attend and complete the Teaching Development Programme at the first available opportunity, but within the first two years of the ASDP
