Apprentice Equipment Mechanic (construction)

Job Description

Job Purpose: To support qualified mechanics in maintaining, repairing, and servicing heavy construction equipment and machinery. The apprenticeship provides structured training and hands-on experience, leading towards a trade qualification in Heavy Equipment Mechanics. Key Responsibilities: Assist senior mechanics with the inspection, servicing, and repair of construction equipment (e.g., excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, cranes, trucks). Learn to diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults under supervision. Perform basic maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication. Assist with stripping, assembling, and testing of mechanical components. Ensure all tools and workshop equipment are used safely and correctly. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment. Document work performed and parts used as part of the training logbook. Attend training sessions (theoretical and practical) as part of apprenticeship requirements. Adhere to workplace safety, health, and environmental regulations.
Minimum Requirements: Matric / Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science (or equivalent). N2/N3 in Engineering Studies (Diesel / Mechanical) will be advantageous. Valid drivers license (Code 08 or higher) preferred. Strong interest in mechanics and heavy construction equipment. Willingness to learn and follow instructions. Ability to work in physically demanding and outdoor environments
