Job Description

Small accounting, auditing and taxation firm servicing clients, large and small, across various industries.

This could be a person ranging from junior to senior. The essential (and largely non-negotiable) requirements would be:

Duties:



General (Applicable to Both Levels)



Prepare and review financial statements in compliance with IFRS and other applicable standards. Reconcile general ledger accounts, bank statements, and journals. Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual closing procedures. Assist audit teams with the preparation and analysis of financial data. Liaise with clients to gather required financial information and documentation. Maintain accurate, up-to-date accounting and tax records in line with regulatory standards. Ensure compliance with relevant accounting and taxation legislation.

Taxation Duties (Applicable to Both Levels, with Senior Duties Noted)



Prepare and submit VAT, PAYE, and other statutory returns to SARS or relevant authorities. Complete and file provisional and annual income tax returns for individuals, companies, and trusts. Assist with tax computations and deferred tax calculations. Ensure clients are up to date with tax compliance and submission deadlines. Respond to SARS queries and assist with audits or disputes. Keep up to date with tax law changes and advise clients accordingly. (More applicable to senior level)*
Perform tax planning and provide guidance to clients on tax-efficient strategies. (Senior level)*
Review and sign off tax returns prepared by junior staff. (Senior level)*

Junior Accountant Specific



Provide support in the preparation of tax returns and reconciliations under supervision. Assist with processing transactions, capturing data, and managing source documents. Participate in basic client interactions and learn tax and audit workflows.

Senior Accountant Specific



Manage full accounting and tax function for assigned clients, including reviews and submissions. Supervise junior staff, review their work, and provide mentorship. Lead audit engagements and provide expert advice on accounting and tax matters. Represent clients in dealings with SARS and assist with tax risk management. Identify tax planning opportunities and proactively address compliance risks.

Requirements:



Has worked in a smaller to medium sized accounting firm, working on clients. Private sector, NOT public sector. If they come from an accounting / auditing firm, they need to have worked on the client accounting side, NOT the audit side. Skilled in the use of Caseware (for drafting AFS) Can use the typical range of accounting packages, eg. Pastel, Sage, Xero, etc. (Xero is VERY preferential) A good working knowledge of SARS, tax in general, and the e-filing system Own vehicle and valid licence (to visit clients) Fluent in English, both written and spoken Versatile character, able to juggle tasks, talk to clients, work with staff etc. Suitable personality for a smaller firm (willing to get stuck in), but someone with ambition and zeal.

Pay: R30000,00 - R50000,00 per month
