Job Description

Machine operation and setup:

Set up, operate, and tend to looms and other textile machinery. Prepare machines by studying patterns and entering settings into computer systems for automated machines. Adjust machine tensions and speeds as needed for different patterns and products.

Quality control:

Monitor machines while they operate to ensure proper function. Inspect finished fabrics or products for defects or inconsistencies. Verify that the products meet the required standards and patterns.

Maintenance and repair:

Perform minor maintenance, such as cleaning or oiling machinery. Repair minor mechanical problems, like a broken needle. Notify supervisors or maintenance staff of major malfunctions.

Production of various goods:

Weave yarn or thread into various textiles and products. Operate machines for other fabric-making processes, such as knitting, tufting carpets, or quilting mattress covers.

Required skills

Manual dexterity and good practical ability. Attention to detail. Ability to concentrate for long periods. Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for technical issues. Basic understanding of health and safety procedures. For modern roles, familiarity with computerized machinery is often necessary. For hand weavers, skills in developing techniques to achieve desired textures and patterns are essential.
