The Water Plant Manager will be responsible for the management and control of Thungela's Emalahleni Water Treatment Facility (EWRP) ensuring an efficient, productive, and safe operation complying with all legal requirements.

Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.



As the Water Plant Manager, you will be expected to effectively manage and control all contractors for the safe and efficient operation of the Water Treatment Facility as well as ensuring the water treatment processes and product water comply with legal and environmental standards.

More of your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and overseeing the treatment of mine effluent water supplied from the operations, as well as monitoring operational and maintenance efficiencies and contract compliance
  • Chairing daily production meetings to ensure operations are running according to targets and that issues are resolved with the OM contractor
  • Developing the off-take and supply schedule on an annual basis
  • Ensuring Service Level Agreements are in place, taking into consideration Thungela Operations, Municipalities as well as other external users and suppliers
  • Monitoring and reporting on the schedule on a monthly and quarterly basis, as well as providing feedback to the operations liaison meetings on previous months performance and related matters
  • Effective stakeholder management as required, which ensures stakeholders are aligned and informed on relevant matters
  • Identifying best practices, technologies and equipment, through research and networking, to further enhance the performance and efficiencies of the EWRP
  • Effective team management as well as ensuring the team understands the Environmental policies and procedures of the organization
  • Preparing annual Capex and Opex business plans timeously and implementing monitoring and controlling the compliance against business plan, so that it is in line with Thungela's requirements
  • Continuously liaising with the Thungela Operations as well as Hydrological and Environmental stakeholders to understand business requirements and priorities
Qualifications
  • Degree in Chemical Engineering / Metallurgical Engineering (NQF Level 7) or a Science degree with a Water Management/Chemistry major
  • Post graduate qualification in Water Management/Treatment is advantageous (NQF Level 8)
  • A Pr. Eng/Pr. Nat Sci qualification is also advantageous
Experience & Knowledge
  • Extensive experience in managing a Water Treatment Facility / Processing Plants
  • Experience in the mining industry
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience in Research and Development Methodologies and Practices (advantageous)
Additional Information
  • An in depth understanding of relevant legislation, i.e., Occupational, Safety and Health Act, Mine Health and Safety Act, National Environmental Management Act, Environmental Conservation Act, National Water Act
  • An understanding of water treatment plant operations, processes, facilities, and equipment
  • Knowledge of the administrative principles and practices pertaining to the operation of a water treatment facility
  • Understanding of engineering principles and practices relating to the maintenance and operations of the water plant
  • An in-depth knowledge of principles and applications of physics and chemistry relating to water
  • An in-depth knowledge of Environmental Management standards and ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001
  • Knowledge of water pollution control methods
  • Knowledge of Water Management systems (WISH and Goldsim)
  • Keeping abreast of best practices and knew technologies
  • Participation in relevant Professional bodies / forums
