Job Description


UTILITIES ENGINEER MIDRAND APRIL 2025Providing a consulting engineering service as well as the design and execution of utilities packages whether stand-alone or integrated into multi-disciplinary projects.Utilities packages include but are not limited to refrigeration, water treatment, steam, compressed air, CO2 and effluent treatment.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Preparing accurate and concise designs, design calculations, budgets, tender specification creation, performing project financial control and diligent construction monitoring and project management of process scope throughout all stages of a project life cycle.
  • Collaborating and working with multi-disciplinary team of engineers on a project while taking an active part in the design process and co-ordination.
  • Completing all types of projects from inception to close out with limited input from management and/or other senior engineers.
  • Being able to focus on client care and professional team management including on-time delivery.
  • Marketing, including attendance at business related networking and client functions. Ensuring repeat work from clients and developing a client base.
  • Setting up client/consultant fee/contract agreements, calculating professional fees and the effective management of professional fees on all projects.
  • Managing internal office project finances regarding hourly forecasting, WIP and invoicing.

Qualifications
  • Minimum BSc Eng. or B. Tech in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Pr Eng/Tech registration highly advantageous
  • At least 5-10 years consulting engineering experience within the FMCG and/or mining environment
Key competencies and Generic skills:
  • Good to excellent communication skills (English) and including report writing abilities. Ability to have clear and accurate communication skills with internal and external professional teams and including clients via email, telecommunication, and face-to-face meetings.
  • Competence in utilities engineering functions from conceptualisation to final handover, including:
  • Developing Conceptual Designs
  • Compiling Basis of Design Scope Definition documents.
  • Development of Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Drawings (P & IDs).
  • Detail design, Datasheets, Tender and Tender Adjudication.
  • Liaison with other disciplines to develop Proposals and Scopes of Work.
  • Implementation of agreed Scopes of Work within your discipline.
  • Specify and prepare material/equipment take-offs for procurement.
  • Liaison with site/construction personnel, from time to time you will be expected to travel to site to review plant construction including foreign countries.
  • Commissioning on site as and when required/Handover Documentation.
  • Client liaison.
  • Keep filing systems and teams updated with the latest documentation generated on a daily basis.
  • Written Process Description or Control Philosophy and Functional Design Specification (FDS).
  • Design Review & Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) Studies attendance and contribution
  • Construction verification (As built)
  • Commissioning
  • Knowledge and experience with Autodesk BIM (Revit, Navisworks, Glue, Field, etc.) and CAD software.
  • Higher than average Microsoft Office package (excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point, etc.) skills.
  • Be able to work independently, take responsibility / ownership for their designs with little input, and follow up from senior management/engineers.
  • High-level quality to the attention to detail when performing design reviews, for sign-off, with internal working peers
  • Good with self and project time-management skills.
  • A good knowledge of the latest technologies within the industry
  • Self-motivated and ambitious. Ability to raise, suggest and drive office/ internal efficiencies.
  • Able to interface professionally across all levels of the professional team and with the client, think on their feet and remain calm when faced with a challenge/ confrontation.
  • Have a pro-active attitude.
  • Ability to offer input with multiple engineering disciplines in project meetings.
  • Good client marketing characteristics and including external project professional team members.
  • Must be a team player and be able to work independently on challenging projects that may have tight timelines.
  • Drivers licence and own mode of transport to travel to sites.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within RSA and Africa

SALARY: Market related up to R55 000/m for Senior Candidates, depending on qualifications, experience and current salary package
