Job Description

Plan, monitor, coordinate and oversee the unit's operations:



Plan and organise multiple work outputs by assigning tasks and priorities and continuously reviewing objectives and goals in line with the Unit standards



Plan, organise, supervise and assess quality nursing standards and ensure efficient and effective execution of the required tasks



Accumulate information to report on work progress and use for decision making purposes and the identification of improvement opportunities



Translate and drive adherence to the relevant regulatory principles and standards across the unit as set out by the SANC and other regulatory bodies



Act as the liaison between nurses and other departments, whilst engaging with relevant stakeholders to ensure operational efficiencies are coordinated to improve overall effectiveness of unit activities in line with hospital requirements



Ensures continuity of care through an accurate, comprehensive handover to related units like operating theatre and diagnostics



Quality, Risk and emergency preparedness:



Implement, monitor, and control service (nursing) delivery processes according to quality standards, policy, and compliance and governance requirements



Ensure the alignment and implementation of end-to-end standard operating procedures / processes in line with hospital policies



Review existing unit delivery processes and suggest innovative ideas to improve and streamline processes to drive efficiencies and minimise redundancy



Organise and monitor stock levels to maximise efficiency, ensuring an effective stock management system is implemented in Units



Ensure that clinical equipment is managed appropriately by staff and that care is taken in terms of prevention of damage to equipment



Manage ward clerks, RNs, RNAs as well as ENAs within area of accountability and drive service optimisation



Conduct environmental and patient safety checks within the ward taking prompt action when required, to meet set clinical quality standards per agreed policies and procedures



Advocates for and leads staff in preserving and protecting of the autonomy, dignity, rights, values, beliefs and preferences of the health care user and family in the midst of dehumanizing environment such as high technology, buzzing alarms, complex decision making like termination of life support considering applicable the code of conduct, Pledge of Service, Patient's Rights Charter, Batho Pele Principles



Patient Advocacy and Internal/External Relationships



Conduct ward rounds to ensure compliance with protocols, security, safe patient environment, policies, procedures and the Group's patient care standards



Inform and educate patients about the Group's complaints procedure and "The Voice" patient experience platform



Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings, review, discuss and co-ordinate best approach to overall patient care



Encourages the demonstration of sensitivity to medico-legal risks related to monitoring and therapeutic interventions in ICU and consciously avoids them or reports them accordingly



Customer Service Delivery and Excellence



Report, analyse and manage customer relations in the Unit including feedback on patient experience and satisfaction and implement improvement opportunities



Develop positive relationships and promote a culture of professionalism and excellence in area of accountability



Contribute to a culture of internal and external customer service excellence, which builds positive relationships and provides opportunities for feedback and exceptional service



Implement processes which build customer service delivery excellence and encourages others to provide exceptional service



Leads the development of appropriate discharge plans concurrently with other interventions of the critically ill patient



Build working relationships across teams and functional lines to enhance work delivery, collaboration and innovation



Build professional long-term relationships with internal (Doctors, Nurses, Hospital Administrators)



Work with internal key leaders to build an escalation chain for internal crises (patient care and unit ops related)



Lead and collaborate with RNs and develop early warning systems to enable nurses outside ICU to implement Preventive critical care (prevention, early detection and immediate action)



Build mutually beneficial relationships with doctors and other professionals in terms of meeting the needs of patients and enhancing patient care



Collaborate with Nursing Manager in identifying and implementing actions to improve service quality and problem resolution within the unit



Build mutually beneficial relationships with Doctors and other clinical and allied professionals with the aim of meeting patient needs and improving quality of care



Coordinate, monitor and supervise the performance of direct reports



Implement people resource planning in line with delivery and performance objectives



Conduct on the job training, coaching and mentoring to direct reports to ensure development of team and improvement of overall service delivery



Contribute to the successful implementation of change initiatives by providing support related to own area of specialisation/accountability



Clearly define goals and objectives and provide direction, coaching and regular feedback



Ensure timesheets, leave, and travel requests are submitted and approved timeously



Ensure compliance with all HR policies, procedures and standards



Implement people resource planning in line with delivery and performance objectives



Conduct on the job training, coaching and mentoring to direct reports to ensure development of team and improvement of overall service delivery



Train and ensure safe and confident operation of various types of technology used in the Critical Care Setting, e.g., mechanical ventilators, cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, both volume, pressure and patient-controlled pumps, IABP, and CVVH



Contribute to the successful implementation of change initiatives by providing support related to own area of specialisation/accountability



Mentors staff and students in the Critical Care Unit to develop expertise in the care of critically ill patients



Monitor costs or expenses within approved budget to achieve cost efficiencies and reduce waste



Comply with cost controls in order to achieve Unit budget



Report on cost usage that reflects delivery of planned work within agreed parameters



Oversee the detailed recording of medical consumables to ensure accurate billing



Identify and implement opportunities for cost reduction and to streamline processes



Identify repeat failures that contribute to wastage



Escalate potential risks that may lead to increased costs or financial losses



Draw up a budget in alignment with operational delivery plans, monitor effectiveness and report on variances



Implement, manage and report on cost effectiveness and communicate or escalate any shortfalls



Adhere to and improve reporting processes for the area of responsibility



Compile and report on operational information to feed into management decisions and support the hospital's tactical strategy and efficiencies



Adhere to statutory standards, policies and procedures within the unit to ensure compliance at all times and take remedial action where necessary



Monitor, analyse and audit the key business processes and metrics



B.Cur/Diploma in General Nursing



Current registration as Registered Nurse with SANC



BLS



Post Basic Trained in Critical Nursing Care and Nursing Administration



3+ years' experience at a managerial/supervisory level.



Experienced in Critical Care Nursing



Experience within a private hospital environment advantageous



Relevant business



Updated ACLS/PALS/ATLS advantageous
