Job Title: Technology Lead (AWS Migration & Architecture)
Location: Remote (Must overlap 4+ hours with CET | Open to Eastern Europe, South Africa, LATAM)
Contract Type: 12-Month Freelance or Full-Time Contract (Potential to Convert to Full-Time)
Industry: HealthTech | Precision Oncology | Robotics | AI
About the Company
We are a cutting-edge HealthTech company transforming the way cancer is treated. Using a proprietary platform that grows 3D tumor "twins" from real patient samples, we enable rapid, high-throughput drug testing to help identify the most effective treatments faster.
Our mission is bold and urgent: get every cancer patient the right therapy, the first time.
To support this, we are embarking on a full-scale modernization of our technology infrastructure--moving from an on-premise "Frankenstein" of Python scripts and Excel processes to a robust AWS cloud-native architecture. This is a greenfield opportunity to lead a high-impact migration that will accelerate innovation across diagnostics, robotics, and data science.
The Opportunity
We're seeking a hands-on Technology Lead to own the architecture, implementation, and oversight of our 1-year cloud migration roadmap. This is a mission-critical leadership role that will report directly to the executive team and collaborate with external tech consultants, life science experts, and cross-functional stakeholders.
You'll be the technical hub of our cloud transformation--balancing strategic oversight with roll-up-your-sleeves execution. If successful, this role has the potential to evolve into a long-term leadership position within our growing team.
What You'll Do
Lead the migration of our legacy, on-prem systems to a scalable AWS cloud environment
Implement a cloud-native architecture aligned with a roadmap created by external consultants
Act as the primary technical lead coordinating specialized contractors (e.g., DevOps, ML engineers)
Serve as the main point of continuity throughout the migration lifecycle
Establish engineering best practices, tools, and documentation for a remote-first, globally distributed team
Collaborate with robotics, diagnostics, and scientific teams to ensure system interoperability
Engage with external vendors and partners to support technology integrations
What Success Looks Like in Year One
A stable, modern AWS architecture is fully operational and scalable
Technical debt from legacy systems is reduced or eliminated
You've shipped high-value platform improvements while maintaining uptime
You've built internal trust as the go-to tech expert during a period of change
You've helped shape the long-term technical direction of the company
What We're Looking For
Must-Haves
Proven, hands-on experience architecting and deploying cloud-native systems in AWS (beyond certifications)
Ability to lead end-to-end migration projects involving legacy modernization
Strong technical judgment and pragmatic execution skills in a startup or scale-up setting
Excellent English communication skills (written and spoken)
At least 4 hours of daily overlap with Central European Time (CET)
Nice-to-Haves
Background in ML, robotics, IoT, or life sciences
Familiarity with IoT protocols like MQTT
Experience managing distributed teams and remote-first development workflows
AWS certification(s)
Experience designing and scaling systems in early-stage companies
Presentation skills and the ability to translate technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders
What's In It for You
Impact: Help build the infrastructure powering next-generation cancer therapies
Autonomy: Join a lean, fast-moving team with direct ownership and decision-making power
Innovation: Collaborate across disciplines--from robotics and diagnostics to AI
Flexibility: Remote-first setup with timezone-friendly scheduling
Compensation: Competitive freelance or full-time package with equity potential
