Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Technical Scientist to be based at McCain Springs site, Gauteng. The successful candidate will report to the Head of R&D.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Technical Scientist will be responsible for the technical administration, execution and management of specifications across entire product portfolio - overseeing McCain & Haverstime branded products, as well as the export and private label business opportunities; including key lift & launch opportunities, cross - category and cross - channel.

This role plays a pivotal role in the Specification Workflow Process via execution of the Data Role, with a sound understanding of the synergies between Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), SAP and Online Tools for data transfers and sync. The role is expected to work collaboratively with the regional/ global as well as local Project Management and IS support teams in building and implementing the data management tools.

Acts as the PLM SME (Product Lifecycle Management Subject Matter Expert) and Super User for all workflow related business alignment activities and training. Drives rigor and governance into New Product Development processes (e.g. Innovation management system) through process mapping and removal of superfluous tasks. Expected to engage with global project management teams in ensuring that IMS for the internal stakeholders (R&D/ Commercial & Finance) is in line with global targets.

The role is also responsible for the management of permit requirements for importing finished goods from both McCain and non-McCain facilities, into South Africa, driving clear synergy across local and global regulations. This role is expected to have a good understanding on South African food regulations, impacting McCain Portfolios.

A key liaison role with local governing bodies and international parties, relative to Country Regulations, to establish and collate regulations & requirements. Provides the business with support on the adoption of global data standards as the Key Workflow PLM Super User.Incumbent must have an unmatched skill to drive & deliver value into the business, demonstrating sustainable, end-to-end technical support and solutions to the South African business, optimizing processes and formulations.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • Product Lifecycle Management Super User:
  • Possess experience in using specification management systems such as PLM, interlinking into the SAP system.
  • Proven and established understanding of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) functionality and operations.
  • A key driver for the implementation of related tools for the SA business, clearly driving alignment between the SA business with regional and global teams.
  • Specification management in relation to ongoing projects and ensures their approval (by internal and external stakeholders) - work closely with the Scientists and Snr Scientists to ensure PLM workload is aligned to project overall timelines.
  • Ensure data accuracy pre- and -post transfer activities for each specification/recipe for New Material Set-Up and Change Material, when required, and the ability to troubleshoot errors incurred.
  • Innovation Management System Super User:
  • Ensures that innovation management is followed accordingly - managing the compliance & governance of the technical data points of all projects to stage gate.
  • Collates technical data & information from post launch reviews to develop improved processes and procedures for the R&D team.
  • Regulatory Support:
  • Maintaining basic knowledge of food regulations to aid product development activities. (e.g., Artwork development against local regulations, e.g., R146 and R727)
  • Secondary peer reviewer for all new artwork to ensure new packaging is compliant with relevant food regulations - local and export markets.
  • Maintains internal BOP's xe2x80x9cBack of Packxe2x80x9d templates in line with all new regulatory updates.
  • Ensures that the approval processes for artworks are followed to mitigate related risks.
  • Key industry liaison for regulatory updates & comms - for the SAF (South Africa) R&D team.
  • Technical Projects Lead:
  • Leads and drives the execution of minor and major opportunity projects in the SAF business, e.g. Pack, Price & Architecture Projects, Sustainability Projects, Pack Upgrades, Formulation/ Recipe Optimization Projects.
EDUCATIONAL & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • National Diploma in Food Technology (Degree in Food Science & Technology will be an added advantage).
  • Packaging diploma and experience as an added benefit for this role.
  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years of relevant and proven industry experience.
  • Needs to have demonstrated experience in using data tools such as PLM, Innovation Stage Gate, or related project management.
  • Must have worked in organizations that utilize integrated business planning - Basic understanding of S&OP.
  • Basic insights on food regulations, Labelling Regulation R146 and other related industry regulations.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced commercially driven food company.
  • Basic skills in interrogating and articulation of product financials/ costings and P&L's (Profit & Loss statements).
