Who are we?

Sanlam Group Technology is responsible for the provision of a digitally enabled technology service as a group COE, drive business and transformation and provide group-wide digital and data architecture. We operate the various technology platforms and shared services, ensure Cyber and Information Security resilience, and act as technology governance and risk orchestrator for technology across Sanlam.

What will you do?

The Technical Lead is responsible for sourcing and loading data across the business. They collaborate with analysts and developers to develop data solutions for business challenges, ensuring data quality and consistency. They also work with security and infrastructure teams to ensure secure and scalable data pipelines. The Senior Data Engineering Technical Lead troubleshoots technical issues and mentors a team of data engineers.

What will make you successful in this role?

• Provide technical leadership: Set the direction for the team, mentor junior engineers, and ensure goal achievement.
• Manage workload: Plan and oversee the team's workload.
• Resolve issues: Act as the escalation point and resolve any issues the team encounters.
• Design and enhance data ingestion frameworks: Develop frameworks to load data consistently and confidently.
• Load large and complex data sets: Ensure data is loaded and available for data engineers to work with.
• Source data: Gather data from internal and external sources, collaborating with subject matter experts.
• Develop ETL infrastructure: Build scalable and efficient infrastructure for data extraction, transformation, and loading using 'big data' technologies.
• Improve processes: Identify and implement internal process improvements.
• Engage with stakeholders: Collaborate with data scientists, business analysts, and solutions architects to meet their technical needs.
• Provide dynamic solution support: Understand the dynamic nature of required solutions and support data analysts and engineers accordingly.
• Ensure data stewardship: Support data stewards in establishing guidelines for data collection, integration, and quality improvements.
• Mentor junior data engineers: Guide and mentor junior members of the data engineering team.

Qualification

Matric
National Diploma in an Information Technology related discipline or a bachelor's degree in computer science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems, or a quantitative field (preferred).

Experience
5+ years of experience as a Data Engineer in a BI environment.
3+ years of experience in a team management role
Experience with ETL toolsets, including Nifi
Agile development experience

Knowledge
Strong SQL skills and proficiency in SQL and procedural extensions
Expertise in Data Engineering with a focus on high-quality data staging.
Solid understanding of SQL, Information Architecture, and ETL procedures.
Proficiency in Database technologies (e.g., SAP Hana, Teradata) and Hadoop components (HDFS, Hive, Spark, Oozie, Impala).
Proficiency in object-oriented/functional/scripting languages (e.g., Python, Unix Shell scripting, Java, Scala).
Understanding of data warehousing principles (e.g., Kimball and Vault).
Familiarity with semi-structured data (e.g., JSON, Avro).
