Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a not-for-profit institution that exhibits, collects, preserves, and researches contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora; conceives and hosts international exhibitions; develops supporting educational, discursive and enriching programmes; encourages intercultural understanding; and strives for access for all. The museumxe2x80x99s galleries feature rotating, temporary exhibitions with a dedicated space for the permanent collection. The institution also includes the Centre for Art Education, the Centre for the Moving Image, and a Project Space for emerging artists. It opened to the public in September 2017.

Job Specification: Facilities Assistant
Department: Operations
Reports to: Assistant Facilities Manager

Job Summary:

The main purpose of the Facilities Assistant is to undertake various repairs within the building and ensuring that building systems are operational. This position will provide support in various facilities-related tasks, including building management systems, after-hours event support, weekend work and standby responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the management of day-to-day operations of the facility.
  • Ensure that contractors on site are escorted through the building.
  • Ensure that contractors working on site are working in a safe manner in accordance with the rules in the Induction Manual.
  • Undertake instructions on preventative maintenance issued by the Assistant Facilities Manager or Facilities Manager.
  • Provide support in maintaining and operating building management systems, including HVAC, lighting, and security systems.
  • Perform regular inspections to identify and report any maintenance or repair issues promptly.
  • Execute repair work orders on damaged and/or faulty equipment, service on all plumbing related equipment, but excluding any other electrical work.
  • Inspect the building every morning for safety and report back to the supervisor.
  • Reporting of any issues timeously that can negatively impact any equipment or life safety.
  • Ensure all work done in the building is done safely in accordance with the OHSAct No 85 of 1993 to maintain general compliance
  • Undertaking the tasks in section 8.2 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHAct) No 85 of 1993
  • Act as a point of contact during standby shifts to respond to emergencies and address any facility-related issues.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory and ordering supplies as needed.
  • Assist where required, under instruction of the Facilities Manager or Assistant Facilities Manager only via a work order, other departments with moving of materials or event setups.
  • Assist in the coordination and execution of after-hour events, ensuring proper setup and breakdown of facilities.
  • Provide weekend support, including attending to urgent facility issues and assisting with event operations as required.
  • Support the development and implementation of facility maintenance schedules and procedures.
  • Assist in monitoring and managing energy usage to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including storage areas and equipment.
Requirements:
  • Minimum Grade 12 certificate, preferably diploma or degree or equivalent; additional certification or training in facilities management is a plus.
  • Minimum of 2 yearsxe2x80x99 experience working within a facilities environment.
  • Proven experience in building management systems and operations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and as needed based on events and emergencies.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with various departments and external vendors.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to identify and resolve facility-related issues.
  • Knowledge and understanding of OHSAct 85 of 1993, health and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Physical stamina to perform manual tasks, such as lifting heavy objects, moving furniture, etc.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Basic knowledge of fire safety systems.
  • Basic knowledge on vertical transport system.
  • Knowledge of how to operate power tools and hand tools safely.
  • Understanding how to work safely in a public environment.
  • Basic knowledge of practices, procedures, equipment, materials and tools, used in the maintenance and repair of buildings.
Professional Registration or License Requirements:
  • Valid Code EB Driverxe2x80x99s License
  • Medically fit experiencing no difficulty with walking, hearing, eyesight, climbing steps or entering confined spaces with no fear of height.
