To obtain appropriate internal and external data, using surveying instruments and technology, to ensure accurate surveying, calculations, certifications and representation on plan of all underground features and mining related events. To monitor survey activities for compliance with the relevant Acts, Regulations and contractual agreements, to enable informed management decision making.
Role Context
Surveying
Perform underground surveys to determine precise measurements of all underground excavations.
Utilise surveying equipment and related software such as total stations, levels, Lidar Scanners and GPS to collect data.
Conduct monthly surveys of mine production faces, ensuring all data is accurately captured and recorded.
Prepare and issue monthly survey certifications for production reporting, compliance and reconciliation purposes.
Perform regular check surveys to verify the accuracy and integrity of the survey control network used for development direction, alignment and grade.
Maintain and update survey control points, ensuring reliability for ongoing mining operations.
Complete volume reconciliation at the ROM pad, including comparison of surveyed stockpile volumes against production and dispatch records.
Provide accurate survey data to mining, geology, and planning teams to support effective production scheduling and decision-making.
Ensure all survey work complies with statutory requirements, company standards and safety procedures.
Create and maintain accurate mine maps and plans.
Collaborate with mining engineers and geologists to ensure survey data is aligned with mine design and geological models.
Assist in the development and implementation of mine plans and designs.
Conduct periodic surveys to monitor and assess ground stability.
Provide support for ventilation and geotechnical monitoring systems.
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
Review and sign off on project milestones and deliverables, providing subject matter expert inputs where applicable, to ensure underground prescribed plans are accurately updated as per regulations.
Support continues improvement in survey methods, controls, and reporting accuracy.
Compliance, Risk and Safety
Conduct daily safety and risk assessments prior to any survey work being conducted, to identify and report any substandard conditions.
Identify and report on unauthorised usage of surface areas, to ensure adherence to all mine standards procedures and legal requirements.
Operational Efficiencies
Import and export electronic information from other systems to resolve internal data requests in the required format.
Stay abreast with latest technological developments to identify and recommend any new technology to optimise mine surveying operations.
Resource Management
Provide input into required changes in resources (financial or non-financial) to enable the achievement of team and/or own objectives.
Determine resource needs of the team and/or own area of work to achieve business outcomes.
Request and allocate required assets and/or resources for the fulfilment of work objectives to guarantee quality outputs.
Monitor the use of assets and resources within the team and own area of responsibility, to ensure assets and resources are consistently and appropriately utilised and managed.
Provide staff with day-to-day direction and tasks aligned with Departmental procedures, to enable the usage of less resources more efficiently.
Track the usage and recording of survey assets by relevant personnel, ensuring the effective maintenance of the Survey Asset Register.
Inspect and maintain surveying instruments and technology, outsourcing expert maintenance support where required, to maintain quality surveying equipment.
Stakeholder Relations
Communicate with all relevant Departments on issues of the area of speciality. Liaise across the relevant Departments by engaging with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure all stakeholders remain abreast of Departmental objectives, any potential derailers are appropriately managed and duplication of work is avoided.
Communicate with internal and/or external stakeholders, where required, to achieve work objectives and to maintain relationships.
Qualifications:
Grade 12
Chamber of Mines Advanced Certificate in Surveying (NQF6) or National Diploma (NQF6) in Surveying or Degree in Mine Surveying
Driving License
Job-specific experience:
Minimum of between three to five (3-5) years relevant experience
Experience using survey instruments, including GPS, Total Station, Drones and Lidar Scanners
Experience using CAD and Lidar processing software is advantageous
