Job Description

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist in designing and redesigning the curriculum by involving all relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist in developing new learning programmes in consultation with industry and other stakeholders.
  • Assist in providing general leadership and ensure academic coherence across all various modules of the programme.
  • In liaison with the Assistant Dean, responsible for financial management (annual budgeting, financial planning, allocation of funds, and financial control), and deployment of the resources needed for maximum benefit to the delivery of the programme with regards, specifically, to student material funds.
  • Motivate and lead employees in the programme to achieve transformation within the programme and the institution.
  • Ensure that the activities of the programme are undertaken in accordance with the governance, policy and regulatory frameworks of the University.
  • Responsible to plan student evaluation throughout the year, book venues and secure an external evaluator. Collect and review in consultation with the Assistant Dean and/or Teaching and Learning office all applications.
  • Follow up and respond to all applications to the programme.
  • Manage the programme's general email.
  • Provide top-quality, research-informed facilitation of learning to ensure practise-based learning and improvement.
  • Assist in assuming responsibility for the academic quality of the programme.
  • Assist in managing curriculation processes of the programme.
  • Assist in managing academic administration.
  • Scholarship of high quality and specialised expertise.
  • Conduct own research.
  • Provide academic advice in terms of academic inquiries, amendments of year books, schedules, timetables, etc.
  • Implement applicable governance, policy and regulatory frameworks of the University.
Inherent Job Requirements:
  • A PhD on NQF Level 10 in Chemistry.
  • A full-time, permanent, Qwaqwa based member of the academic staff of the Department of Chemistry at the University of the Free State (UFS).
  • A good academic record.

The Subject Head allowance is payable, which is calculated according to a transparent formula approved by the relevant decision-making structures of the UFS. The value of the allowance is available on request.
