Duties and Responsibilities: Provision of Student Emotional and Mental Counselling Services

  • Creates a plan and schedule of provision of counselling services for students on the campus.
  • Provides individual primary counselling to students and explores/determines if the student should be referred for secondary counselling and unpacks their referral options if appropriate.
  • Provides students with coping techniques and skills to deal with life challenges.
  • Receives the signed consent form from the student prior to the commencement of the first counselling session.
  • Establishes trustworthy relationships with students that opens channels for communication between the campus and students.
  • Facilitates group counselling for students with similar problems.
  • Establishes a referral network for secondary counselling.
  • Presents Life Skills workshops addressing relevant social and emotional problems experienced by students.
  • Creates awareness campaigns surrounding universal social and emotional issues and sources relevant guest speakers to add value to the campaign and address students on relevant topics.
Creation, Rollout and Monitoring of Awareness Campaigns
  • Sets a calendar for following the year of awareness campaigns based on the reports compiled throughout the previous year.
  • Identifies key themes, suggests possible campaigns and plans awareness campaigns accordingly.
  • Designs, develops, implements and manages awareness programmes and campaigns and includes and oversees the VC Cares student committee assisting with these campaigns.
Planning, Rollout and Monitoring of Community Engagement Programmes
  • Facilitates engagements between The IIE's Varsity College students, staff and Non-Government Organisation (NGO's) and identifies opportunities for Community Engagements.
  • Plans the annual community engagement and counselling calendar.
  • Markets sustainable community engagement outreach programmes and encourages student participation in these programmes.
  • Manages logistics and implementation plans for the successful rollout of community outreach programmes.
  • Creates awareness amongst students regarding social issues.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with stakeholders in the community.
  • Empowers students with a sense of citizenship (e.g., by donating blood).
  • Guides and encourages students to get involved in activities for community projects, e.g. soup kitchen, Mandela Day, old age home visits etc.
  • Along with the VC Cares student committee, oversees the budget expenditure.
  • Augments budgets through fund raising initiatives.
  • Identifies beneficiary organisations with students for community outreach programmes.
  • Educates students about giving back and sharing the skills with them to do so.
  • Sources sponsors to support community outreach programmes.
  • Co-ordinates communications and visibility of campaigns.
Bursary Management
  • Identifies, appoints and manages the VC Cares committee and allocates bursaries to members on the committee based on the outcomes of the mid-year performance reviews.
  • Identifies Non-Government Organisation representatives who qualify for bursaries in conjunction with the Campus Head.
  • Determines and evaluates the needs of Non-Government Organisation representatives and their bursary requirements.
  • Manages the Non-Government Organisation bursary registration process in partnership with the Part Time Division.
  • Student Wellness Administration and Reporting
  • Provides annual registration process support specifically relating to the marketing of the Student Wellness Manager services.
  • Communicates and liaises with students specifically in relation to Student services available.
  • Compiles and submits weekly student wellness status and progress reports as well as the weekly Student Activity Report to the Student Services Manager including statistics and details of student referrals.
  • Uploads and maintains a monthly register of events including Corporate Social Investment (CSI) onto the CSI repository.
  • Compiles and submits the necessary reports to the national office and ADvTECH head office as and when required.
  • Keeps records of each counselling session and any interventions implemented or recommended and captures notes on the relevant business system to track these sessions for reporting purposes and ensure that the maximum number of sessions (3 per student issue) is not exceeded.
  • Compiles and submits the annual collated report per campus that is submitted to the Leadership Team.
  • Manages the Bachelor of Education (BED) service learning (community service hours) and manages the roster of student participations and hours and signs off the service-learning portion of the Portfolio of Evidence (POE).

Minimum Education Requirements:
  • Minimum of Postgraduate Diploma / Bachelor Honours Degree (NQF Level 8) in Counselling Psychology or Social Work. Ideal qualification Social Worker / Psychologist (NQF Level 9).
  • Legal Requirements - Registered with Social Work Council or Health Professions Council of South Africa as a counsellor and Driver's License.
Minimum Work Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum of 2 years Trauma Counselling and 2 years Community Engagement experience.
Preference will be given to EE candidates
