To provide expert structural engineering input for the feasibility, planning, and conceptual design of permanent structures associated with the 10,000-capacity beef feedlot and high-throughput abattoir. The Structural Engineer will ensure that all designs meet safety, durability, functionality, and regulatory compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct structural feasibility analysis of proposed site infrastructure, including pens, shades, holding yards, abattoir buildings, processing and packaging facilities, waste treatment areas, and water reservoirs.
Design structural components suited for:
Heavy livestock use.
High-traffic load areas.
Climate resilience and corrosion resistance.
Develop preliminary structural layouts and loading plans for all critical infrastructure based on geotechnical and environmental data.
Determine appropriate construction materials and structural systems for rural/agri-processing settings.
Collaborate closely with civil engineers, architects, and quantity surveyors to ensure integration of structural elements into overall site development plans.
Assess foundation needs based on local soil conditions and topography.
Ensure designs meet South African building codes, SANS regulations, and occupational health and safety standards.
Provide cost-efficient structural solutions aligned with the phased development model.
Contribute technical content to feasibility reports including risk assessments and construction phasing recommendations.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree or higher in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a focus on structures.
Minimum of
5 years' experience
in structural design for
industrial, agricultural, or agro-processing infrastructure
, ideally including feedlots or abattoirs.
Registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
as a
Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng)
or
Professional Engineering Technologist (Pr. Tech Eng)
.
Sound understanding of structural behaviour under dynamic and static loads (e.g., animal movement, machinery).

Proficiency in structural design software (e.g., Prokon, Tekla Structures, Revit Structure, AutoCAD).
Strong knowledge of concrete, steel, and composite design principles.
Ability to work under pressure and within multidisciplinary teams.
Excellent problem-solving and structural detailing skills.
Familiarity with agricultural infrastructure specifications, rural construction challenges, and design-for-durability.
