Job Description

My client is looking for an experienced Steel Buyer to manage the sourcing and procurement of structural steel, plate, and coil products. You'll work with supplier , contract negotiation, order placement, and inventory control to ensure high-quality materials are delivered on time and at optimal cost.
Key Responsibilities
Source, negotiate, and place purchase orders for steel materials (structural, plate, coil).
Evaluate supplier quotes based on price, quality, lead time, and service
Track and expedite orders; ensure on-time delivery and manage order discrepancies.
Verify mill test certificates (MTCs) and perform quality control upon receipt of materials.
Maintain accurate inventory records and collaborate with planning, logistics, and quality teams
Analyze market trends, steel pricing indices, and material availability to inform strategic decisions
Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships and identify new sources.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce costs and lead times.
Ensure purchase orders match delivery schedules, negotiate terms, and resolve any disputes.
Minimum Requirements
Steel procurement experience is mandatory - minimum of 5 years in structural or coil steel buying
Proven history of negotiating contracts and securing cost savings.
Familiarity with mill test certificates, material specifications, and dimensional verification.
Strong understanding of steel market dynamics, supplier management, and logistics.
Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
Proficiency in ERP/MRP systems and MS Office (Excel, Word).
Relevant post?secondary qualification in Supply Chain, Business, Engineering, or equivalent preferred.
Ability to collaborate across teams (Engineering, Quality, Planning, Finance).
Desired Skills (High Priority)
Demonstrated success negotiating volume discounts or blanket agreements.
Experience in managing inventory levels and minimizing purchase price variance.
