We're a new, upbeat sensory and developmental hub built on one big idea: when children feel safe, supported and understood, real growth happens. We are a residential, day schooling, and respite care facility. We're assembling a small, excellent team that blends competence, consistency, warmth and professionalism every day.
We are now looking for a
Speech Therapist (Independent Contractor)
who works exclusively with
Autistic children
(ages 6-15), including those with co-occurring ADHD. Our learners are a mix of
non-verbal
,
echolalic
, and
partially verbal
communicators. There are no additional diagnoses or high-support medical conditions in our profile -- so you can confidently focus on Autism-centred communication work.
The Role (what you'll be doing):
Provide weekly, scheduled speech therapy sessions to Autistic and ADHD-diagnosed learners (6-15), focusing on functional communication, social communication, expressive/receptive language, AAC, and play-based interaction.
Conduct full baseline assessments: parent interview, communication profile, observation assessment (with educator present), and summary report.
Develop targeted communication goals and session plans aligned with each learner's abilities and Aut-to-Play's programme.
Support learners across a range of communication profiles: non-verbal, emerging communicators, gestalt language processors/echolalic learners, and those developing clearer verbal speech.
Collaborate closely with our multidisciplinary team: educator, caregivers, occupational therapist, and other allied professionals.
Maintain a consistent weekly therapy schedule with predictable sessions and minimal cancellations.
Communicate clearly with families through modelling, coaching and practical home strategies.
Keep structured clinical records (HPCSA-compliant): session notes, recommendations, progress summaries, and end-of-year reports.
Provide medical aid-ready invoices (ICD-10 + CPT codes) and annual statements for tax purposes.
Uphold safeguarding, communication ethics, and professional boundaries in a paediatric therapy setting.
What excellence looks like at Aut-to-Play:
You're confident supporting Autistic children across diverse communication profiles (non-verbal, echolalic/gestalt processors, partially verbal).
You understand AAC in all its forms: low-tech visuals, core boards, PECS, picture supports, and/or speech-generating devices, and you're comfortable designing or adapting systems.
You're reliable, punctual, and able to commit to a fixed weekly therapy schedule throughout the school term.
You collaborate easily with a multidisciplinary team and align communication targets with OT, classroom and home goals.
Your communication with families is clear and encouraging, providing practical strategies which will not overwhelm
You keep clean, organised notes and your reporting is timely and meaningful.
You bring a calm presence, good humour, and a genuine respect for neurodivergent communication styles.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology / Speech Therapy.
At least 3 years' experience working specifically with Autistic children (ages 6-15).
