Job Description


We are seeking a skilled and passionate Sommelier to join a highly acclaimed hotel, renowned for its commitment to excellence in hospitality. As a Sommelier with them, you will play a pivotal role in elevating the overall dining experience, ensuring that their guests are treated to exceptional food and wine pairings in a sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Training of Staff: Provide comprehensive training to restaurant staff, imparting knowledge on wine service standards and maintaining a high level of expertise among the team.
  • Food and Wine Pairing: Expertly pair wines with set menus, a la carte options, and special events to enhance the overall dining experience for our guests.
  • Wine Tasting: Conduct engaging and informative wine tastings for hotel guests and VIPs, showcasing your in-depth knowledge and passion for the world of wines.
  • Beverage Trends: Stay abreast of trends in the beverage industry and align our offerings accordingly, ensuring our selection remains contemporary and enticing.
  • Presentation and Temperature: Ensure all drinks are presented impeccably and served at the correct temperature to meet the highest standards of service.
  • Inventory Management: Place orders for wines and other beverages, conduct regular stock takes, and manage a healthy beverage cost to minimize losses.
  • Operational Excellence: Set up and maintain the wine service area, monitor equipment functionality, conduct temperature checks, and ensure the cleanliness and readiness of decanters.
  • Compliance: Adhere strictly to the provisions and regulations outlined in the Liquor Act (No. 59 of 2003) and other applicable regulations related to the sale of alcoholic beverages.
Requirements:
  • Certification: Hold a certificate from the Cape Wine Academy/WSET Level 2 or above.
  • Experience: Preferably possess 2-3 years of wine tasting experience with in-depth product knowledge.
  • Wine Knowledge: Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of wines, including grape varieties, regions, harvest times, climates, soils, and the winemaking process.
  • Passion: Exhibit a genuine passion for wine and the hospitality industry, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Customer Service: Maintain a strong customer service orientation, ensuring guest satisfaction through your expertise and personalized service.
  • Professionalism: Build and maintain professional relationships with all departments, while comfortably interacting with a distinguished clientele.
  • Presentation: Be well-presented, enthusiastic, flexible, and accountable in executing your responsibilities.
