About Mission for Inner City

Mission for Inner City Cape Town is an innovative non-profit that brings together business, government, and community to transform the inner city into a more inclusive, vibrant, and sustainable place for all. Through placemaking, economic development, urban innovation, and targeted investment, we aim to reimagine Cape Town's CBD as a home for opportunity, culture, and dignity.

We are seeking a Smart City GIS Analyst to leverage information and communication technologies for the collection and analysis of spatial data. This role will support the planning of urban placemaking initiatives in response to evolving demographic, mobility, and environmental trends.

Our Values & work environment

Creativity, Curiosity, and Collaboration

Our centrally located workspace is tastefully curated by Cape Town's top Brand builders and designers. The space is bright, airy and clean. We have multiple open office spaces/hot desks, a lounge, small kitchen, sparkly clean restrooms and 2 boardroom spaces. We frequently embark on "walkshops" around the inner city. The small (and growing!) team is diverse, creative and open-minded.

Role Purpose

To build and run a practical, creative, and collaborative data ecosystem that brings our work at the Mission for Inner City to life. You will turn messy, real-world data into clear, actionable insights that show progress, drive decisions and build trust and hope across stakeholders - from city officials and corporates to local communities.

This is a highly strategic role that blends technical analytics with storytelling, civic purpose, and system thinking. You will be instrumental in shaping how data is used to reimagine Cape Town's inner city.

Key Responsibilities

Data Strategy & Architecture Design and maintain a city data dashboard that tracks KPIs across multiple domains (safety, business activity, vacancy, investment, mobility, well-being). Identify, procure, and manage diverse datasets from public, private, and civic sources. Develop systems for data governance, security, and quality assurance. Urban Intelligence & Analysis Conduct trend and scenario analysis to support strategic interventions in the inner city. Use geospatial, socio-economic, and behavioral data to map patterns and propose urban interventions. Support the development of place-based indicators for placemaking, vibrancy, inclusion, and resilience. Insights for Action Translate complex datasets into accessible formats for stakeholders: visual dashboards, reports, and briefings. Collaborate with communications and placemaking teams to produce story-driven infographics, public reports, and community feedback tools. Contribute to the development of an Inner City Health Index or similar composite indicators. Stakeholder Engagement Engage with city departments, data vendors, NGOs, and research partners to source and validate data. Support collaborative research projects and evaluations with academic and corporate partners. Present insights to internal and external stakeholders including city leadership and funders.

Skills & Experience Required:

A minimum of 5-8 years of data analysis experience, with a proven track record in urban, civic, or social sectors. Advanced proficiency with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, and Looker Studio, as well as expertise in data analysis software including Python, R, and SQL. Practical experience working with spatial data (GIS) and utilizing civic open data platforms.

Preferred:

Familiarity with urban indicators, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), or city performance measurement. Background in urban studies, economics, public policy, data science, or a related field. Experience with participatory data collection, community mapping, or civic tech platforms. Knowledge of Cape Town's inner city or South African urban policy context.

Who You Are

?

Analytical & Methodical:

You brings structure, rigor and strong data integrity to complex, multi-source datasets.

?

Creative & Curious:

You're always the one asking "how else can we measure this?" You are resourceful about finding or combining data in new ways.

?

Collaborative:

You thrive in a co-creation environment; work well with different types of people - from corporate funders to local citizen groups.

?

Adaptable & Practical:

You understands that "perfect data" rarely exists - you are able to balance quality with practical, good-enough-to-act insight.

?

Mission-Aligned:

You embody our team's core values -- creativity, curiosity, and collaboration -- and care deeply about building trust and hope in the community.
