SHEQ Officer - Northern Suburbs, Cape Town
Food Manufacturing | SHE / Compliance
Full-time | On-site
A well-established gourmet meat processing facility in the Northern Suburbs is seeking a qualified and proactive Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Officer to manage and maintain SHE systems, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives across the business.
This role is critical in ensuring compliance with legislation, certifications, and customer requirements while promoting a safe, ethical, and sustainable working environment.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Safety, Health and Environment Management System
  • Ensure compliance with OHS Act, NEMA, FSSC 22000, SMETA, IBL, and customer requirements
  • Participate in SMETA and other audits and ensure closure of non-conformances within set timelines
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to SHE performance
  • Develop and deliver SHE training to employees at prescribed intervals
  • Coordinate and conduct SHE Committee meetings and implement recommendations
  • Prepare SHE performance reports, statistics, and presentations
  • Review and conduct emergency response procedures and drills
  • Oversee sustainability initiatives within the business
  • Manage certification of First Aiders, Fire Fighters, OHS Reps, and Forklift Drivers
  • Maintain accurate SHE documentation and records
  • Perform additional SHE-related duties as required
Key Requirements:
  • Relevant degree or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Food Science, or similar
  • Relevant short courses in SHE and Food Safety Management Systems
  • Minimum 1-2 years' post-graduate experience in a SHE role, preferably in food manufacturing
  • Sound knowledge of South African SHE legislation and local by-laws
  • Experience with management systems and sustainability platforms (e.g. SEDEX, SHERPA) advantageous
  • Understanding of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems
  • Proficiency in MS Office with strong report-writing skills
  • Excellent organisational, communication, and time management skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail and document control
  • Understanding of SMETA/Ethical Audits advantageous
