The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated and meticulous individual to set up an online virtual museum and co-ordinate content in the form of specimen data sets, specimen images and digitized collection documents from various institutions in order to ensure that the objectives of the Natural Science Collections Facility are met

This position requires a degree in Life Sciences, Information Sciences, Information Technology or equivalent qualification at NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification in Life Sciences, Information Sciences, Information Technology or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 6 years of work experience in relevant field.

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: knowledge and experience in managing and cleaning biological/biodiversity data sets; experience in web site development and digital asset content management; comprehensive knowledge and experience in stakeholder engagement and relationship management, as well as project management; advanced experience in the implementation of relevant legislation, policies, procedures, processes, and regulatory framework relevant to programme and project management; excellent project management skills; ability to work with diverse team and under pressure whilst being quality, cost and safety conscious; in-depth organisational, analytical, and problem solving skills; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The possession of a valid driver's licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and apply standards, protocols and tools for virtual museum content (including images, digitised documents, links to specimen data sets);
  • Manage digital content for virtual museum (including specimen images, digitised documents, metadata for specimen data sets);
  • Set up and maintain virtual museum using existing open source software;
  • Coordinate and participate in stakeholder engagement sessions
