The Senior SHEQ Officer is responsible for ensuring full compliance with all applicable Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Environmental (NEMA) regulations on-site. This includes overseeing all risk-related matters, maintaining accurate records and registers, facilitating hazard identification, and driving continuous improvement in SHEQ standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the FMCG or manufacturing sectors, with excellent communication and organisational skills.

Occupational Health and Safety

  • Ensure full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all relevant municipal by-laws.
  • Conduct Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA) regularly across the site, including machinery and equipment.
  • Facilitate and document accident/incident investigations, identifying root causes and corrective actions.
  • Coordinate and ensure execution of fire drills and LMI (Lifting Machinery Inspector) testing.
  • Oversee all equipment and plant inspections, ensuring legal compliance and documentation.
  • Record and manage the distribution of PPE in designated registers.
  • Conduct contractor file audits, ensuring safety compliance before work begins.
Environmental Compliance (NEMA)
  • Ensure site compliance with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and all related environmental regulations.
  • Manage environmental impact assessments, waste management practices, and municipal environmental registrations and permits.
  • Maintain up-to-date registers related to environmental and safety documentation.
  • Oversee compliance with checklists, permits, and environmental reporting obligations.
Document Control and Administration
  • Facilitate and maintain the full SHE document control system including registers, policies, procedures, and forms.
  • Ensure all First Aid boxes and fire equipment are compliant and fully stocked/tested.
  • Ensure all documentation and reporting meets compliance standards with a focus on accuracy and attention to detail.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • SAMTRAC Certification (mandatory)
  • 35 years experience in a similar SHEQ role
  • Sector Experience: FMCG or Manufacturing (non-negotiable)
  • Proficient in safety legislation, municipal by-laws, and SHE systems
