SENIOR SCIENTIST (E)

One-Year Contract

The Burden of Disease Research Unit manages a Cancer Registry based in the Eastern Cape, which is well established and has a considerable data repository. We require the services of a Senior Scientist with experience in a research institute environment to assist the cancer registration project by rendering scientific and technical skills and to deputize the Cancer Registry Head. The appointee will be based in Parow, Cape Town, and will be expected to contribute to running the register and to reviewing, analysing, interpreting, publishing, and disseminating research findings.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage project activities, including training and supervision of junior staff.
  • Assurance of data quality processes
  • Contribute to science knowledge through data analysis and publication of reports and peer reviewed journal articles.
  • Key planning and management processes.
  • Assist the Principal Investigator in achieving the project research outputs.
  • Assist the Project Head with collaborative research locally, regionally, and internationally.
Core Requirements:
  • Master's degree in clinical Epidemiology or Master's in Public Health including formal health economics or epidemiology and biostatistics training.
  • At least 3 years' experience in clinical and health research or Public Health environment.
  • Experience in working with large quantitative data sets.
  • Knowledge of electronic questionnaire design and online data management.
  • Experience in managing a project team and coordinating a research project.
  • Experience in creating and interpreting graphs and applying basic statistics.
  • Proficient in programming in at least one statistical software package, i.e. STATA, R, etc.
  • Oral presentations for at least three conferences/seminars/meetings in epidemiology/ biostatistics/ public health.
  • At least one first-authored publication and one co-authored publication.
  • Experience with interacting with relevant stakeholders for research translation, including statistical information.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English and have basic knowledge of isiXhosa.
  • Valid unendorsed code 8 driver's license.
  • Willingness and availability to travel.
Advantageous:
  • Registration for Ph.D. in Public Health-related research
  • More than 5 years' experience working in epidemiology and public health research groups/center and experience in collecting survey data is preferred.
  • Experience with ICD-O coding of cancer data would be an advantage.
  • Experience with using data dashboards for project monitoring and quality assurance.
  • GCP certificate
  • Strong academic background and publication record are desired, with a publication track record as a co-author in the cancer registry field.

A salary in the region of R558 143 per annum cost-to-company, will be negotiated in consideration of experience and qualifications.
