The SAMRC is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and motivated Scientist to play an active role in non-communicable disease and wastewater-based epidemiology research within the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform (BRIP). The focus of the position will include establishing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capacity within BRIP.
The SAMRC is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and motivated Scientist to play an active role in non-communicable disease and wastewater-based epidemiology research within the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform (BRIP). The focus of the position will include establishing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capacity within BRIP to address the increasing complexity of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and to support wastewater-based epidemiology initiatives.
The Scientist will be responsible for developing and implementing computational models and analytical frameworks to integrate and interpret multi-omics, clinical, and lifestyle data. In addition, the Scientist will be expected to mentor and train postgraduate students and staff, publish research findings in international peer-reviewed journals, present at national and international conferences, and contribute to grant proposal development as a co-investigator.
Key Responsibilities / Learning Outcomes:
Develop and implement AI/ML models to analyse and integrate multi-omics, clinical, and lifestyle datasets for advancing research on non-communicable diseases
Lead and contribute to research projects focused on non-communicable diseases and wastewater-based epidemiology initiatives
Train and mentor postgraduate students and research staff
Disseminate research outputs through publications and presentations
Contribute to grant writing and resource mobilization efforts

Job Requirements
Core Requirements:
Master's degree in molecular biology, Genetics or a related field.
At least two years research experience in computational and statistical analysis of high-dimensional and multivariate data
At least two experiences in Project management and data management
Presenting research findings and reports at relevant conferences/meetings
Familiar and up-to-date knowledge of next generation sequencing modalities
Experience in working in Linux environments
Proficiency in common scripting languages (Python, Java and R)
At least one year with next generation sequencing data analysis
Advantageous:
Experience with Good Clinical/Laboratory Practices.
A track record initiation and management of several research projects.
Comprehensive use of computational clusters for all analytical methods.
Knowledge of Large Language Models.
