Our client who has been established in South Africa and investing on behalf of clients and has grown to become one of Africa's largest investment management companies. This company is an investment management firm focussed on building long-term wealth for their clients. The company's primary goal is to achieve long term wealth creation for its clients.
They now seek a new specialist subject matter expert with a great track record of business development and strategy in the- multi-manager space. You will form part of the investment platform function within the broader investment management business. You will report to the executive and be responsible for the platform and distribution of its product offering to financial advisers. Other key stakeholders will include product development and retail business heads. This is a new and important role. You need to be high energy; a driver and a motivator and be happy with significant national travel. The brand sells itself but needs an expert to champion it. JOB DESCRIPTION WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

  • You will be responsible for the full multi-manager offering;
  • You will be responsible for relationship building with independent financial advisers, with the aim of comprehensively addressing their investment advice needs;
  • Existing multi-manager product offering:
  • You will be responsible for ensuring that existing multi-manager portfolios are managed in line with their mandates, risk tolerance and regulatory requirements. The portfolios have been available on a contained basis and were extended to a broader retail adviser audience more recently;
  • Investment, governance, and reporting processes:
  • You will be responsible, as chair of the multi-manager investment committee, for the investment methodology, including accompanying investment processes. This includes oversight of fund and manager research and due diligence processes, including quantitative and qualitative factors and future decisions related to which aspects to outsource and solve for internally. Processes governing fund selection, portfolio construction and risk management should be reviewed, documented and maintained;
  • You will be responsible for necessary compliance, reporting and controls, drawing on group assurance resource as required. You will be required to oversee governance structures around investment decision making and client reporting to ensure that they are robust and that the business unit is operating in full compliance with the FSCA and other applicable regulation;
  • Distribution of offering:
  • At the outset, the primary distribution channel will be to financial advisers via the platform's business development team. You will be responsible for training the distribution team and ensuring that they have the materials which they need to market the offering. This will require continued definition and refinement of the distribution and servicing strategy, as well as ongoing ownership of a clearly articulated and differentiated proposition and accompanying marketing messaging and materials;
  • You will be required to regularly travel nationally in order to effectively support the regional distribution teams on larger, more technical presentations and report backs. Effective distribution will also require a focus on relationship building with financial advisers and key industry stakeholders and representation of the business at industry events, conferences, and in the media by way of considered thought leadership;
  • Development of a focused team:
  • You will be required to build and lead a small, dedicated multi-manager team. Short term, the product is likely to require some dedicated analytical capacity, as well a dedicated distribution resource;
  • Strategic definition and execution:
  • The initial offering consists of a limited number of multi-asset portfolios made available via the business's investment platform. The ambition is to develop the offering such that it more comprehensively addresses financial adviser and client need. You will be responsible for proposing, substantiating and executing on the business plan and roadmap, evidencing a commercial and entrepreneurial mindset while doing so. This may include the need for additional mandates, investment vehicles, distribution channels, technologies and support offerings.
  • You will be required, looking ahead, to play a key role in establishing and building a new business unit with product lines, functions and distribution channels extending beyond the initial scope. There is also opportunity for you to assume responsibility for adjacent areas of the investment platform, such as curation of platform fund lists, vetting of third-party fund managers available on the platform and streamlined integration of the solutions into the platform.

  • You have excellent presentation and communication (verbal and written) skills in English, with the ability to engage professional stakeholders, such as financial advisers and institutional partners, confidently;
  • You have demonstrable problem solving, analytical and execution skills;
  • You have business growth & commercial impact by way of AUM growth, adviser adoption, adviser book conversion, adviser retention and revenue & profit contribution;
  • You have consistent delivery of risk-adjusted performance in line with mandates and objectives, and relative to appropriate benchmarks and peer offerings;
  • You are able to maintain strong investment governance and process discipline, as measured by IC reports, audit reviews, effective controls, rigorous and responsive manager research and compliance checks;
  • You are able to impact and reach of marketing and distribution initiatives, including programmes and events;
  • You are able to deliver projects and business initiatives on time and within budget;
  • You have a compliance record, demonstrating effective management and mitigation against material compliance breaches and the submission and maintenance of all required governance documents, policies and procedures.
CORE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • You have relevant qualifications: CFA, CA(SA), CFP(R),
  • You have proven track record in a relevant senior role, with a minimum of 5 years' current, relevant experience in discretionary fund management or multi-management;
  • You have technical knowledge of fund and manager research, portfolio construction and investment risk management;
  • You have an understanding of the South African investment and adviser landscape.
