Job Description


The School of Agricultural, Earth and Environmental Sciences (SAEES) is seeking to appoint an individual with expertise in geochemistry. The incumbent will be required to teach, using curricula in keeping with modern developments in the field, and will assist in developing discipline-wide postgraduate teaching programmes. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain active research programmes and conduct research in aspects of geology that will involve post-graduate students, attract external funding and supervise post-graduate students. S/he will be expected to be involved in the School administration/outreach activities.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for the Geological Sciences analytical laboratory and will be required to manage the Panalytical XRF and XRD equipment as well as a Perkin Elmer Nexion ICP-MS with LA system. Other analytical equipment includes a SGE-USGS heating-freezing stage for fluid inclusion studies.

The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader: Geological Sciences.

Minimum Requirements:

Senior Lecturer

  • A PhD degree in Geological Science or related field.
  • Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at tertiary level.
  • Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journals, appropriate for the level.
  • A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and/or PhD level appropriate for the level.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the Principal Investigator or as a member of a team.
Lecturer:
  • A PhD degree in Geological Science or related field or Master's degree in Geological Sciences, with evidence of submission of PhD for examination.
  • Experience in teaching in a relevant field at tertiary institution.
  • Evidence of presentations, at national or international conference.
  • Current research activity as evidenced by a publication in quality scientific journals.
