Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Fire Safety Engineering
(Five-year fixed-term full-time appointment)

The Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU) is a leading educational faculty on the African continent. The fire engineering team within the Department of Civil Engineering is a vibrant, growing and active team engaging in education, research, and industry research and development work. This position is to support the development of a masters programme in fire engineering.
This is a five-year, fixed-term full-time contract appointment with the possibility to extend the appointment after five years, conditional on the availability of funds.
Duties:
Teaching postgraduate fire engineering modules;
Supervising postgraduate students, especially masters students;
Research and publishing of academic work in fire engineering;
Academic and departmental administration;
Generating support and funds in the fire engineering research group.
Requirements:
Lecturer:
An applicable BEng or BScEng degree enabling professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA);
A background in fire engineering or related field (combustion, heat transfer, structural fire engineering, etc.), with a PhD in a relevant engineering field, OR an MEng/MSc degree combined with at least three years industry experience, with a focus on fire safety engineering;
An excellent academic study record in engineering;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
The ability to teach masters level courses in fire engineering (e.g., in fields such as smoke behaviour, evacuation, detection, suppression, performance-based design, etc.).
Senior Lecturer:
An applicable BEng or BScEng degree enabling professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA);
A background in fire engineering or related field (combustion, heat transfer, structural fire engineering, etc.), with a PhD in a relevant engineering field, OR an MEng/MSc degree combined with at least eight years industry experience, with a focus on fire safety engineering;
A research track record demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications or postgraduate supervision;
An excellent academic study record in Engineering;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
The ability to teach on masters level courses in fire engineering (e.g., in fields such as smoke behaviour, evacuation, detection, suppression, performance-base design, etc.).
